Concerns Of Plague From China
The head of a Chinese government expert team said Monday that human-to-human transmission has been confirmed in an outbreak of a new coronavirus.
This new virus has been spread among over 200 people in China according to officials. There have also been a few reported cases in Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Concerns for landfall in the US are high as passengers from Wuhan are being screened, but it might already be too late. The National Health Commission task force also found that some medical workers have tested positive for the virus, the English-language China Daily newspaper said.
This seems similar to years back in 2003 when SARS had become a major concern, with very similar concerns and screenings. It seemed to stem from southern China and caused 8,098 cases, resulting in 774 deaths reported in 37 countries, with the majority of cases in China and Hong Kong. SARS had a 9.6% fatality rate according to the World Health Organization. No cases of SARS have been reported worldwide since 2004, but this does seem like a similar situation. This new virus is actually in the same family as SARS and MERS which is why the concern is at a high, if this was to be spread in a highly-populated area, the results could be tragic. Although more than 700 people died of SARS, for example, the majority of those deaths were among older people and those with underlying health problems, so the hopes are if nothing else that this will be the same.
This could be very important because of the time we are in. Sure, time and time again illnesses pop up and it seems nothing really comes of it that is truly catastrophic, but, adding things up in the last 2 decades or so and the severity of illnesses and the rate of death does seem to be increasing. Science has helped fight off a lot and that's probably due to the fact that some of these diseases are manmade and probably used for population control, but at the root of it, with so many changes happening globally in disasters and conflicts, it is a sign of the end.
