Does ju jitsu really kill your ego
A lot of people will tell you that there is no ego in ju jitsu. I can understand that it is humbling to be a 200 lb man getting choked and controlled by a smaller guy that is weaker than you. I understand that point of view. I understand that constantly being beaten up every day can be humbling. I understand that ju jotsu teaches you to be respectful and not underestimate a smaller guy, but ego is huge in ju jitsu and my explanation will be very quick.
The UFC. 20 years ago UFC 1 was basically the Gracie family wanting to prove that Brazilian Ju Jitsu was the best martial art in the world. It doesn't get any more egocentric than that. Think of it today the largest fighting platform in the world was started on the concept of a family in Brazil who wanted to prove they were the best. That to me is ego. Also remember when they used to go to dojos and challenge people to fights. Also any fighter during interviews they don't say things like I am ok I guess. They all say I am the best in the world no one can beat me.
The way I think ju jitsu does help with attitude is mostly in the dojo. You are more respectful of your partners and coaches after training. I also notice, I seem to treat people with more respect than I used to outside of the gym, that could just be from discipline. However I think ego is still and always will be in ju jitsu and martial arts. I think wanting to be the best and say your the best is what builds your desire to grow and try harder to get better. I think if you have an ego just control it and become the best you can be and still treat everyone with respect.
I think humans are humans. I think it goes both ways. I'd use the word "influence" instead. Maybe it doesn't change you but it definitely influences you.
influence instead of kill yes. makes perfect sense. @jiujitsu thanks for taking the time to vote and comment and view my post
No problem. I enjoy your posts. You write about some interesting stuff. I'll keep upvoting and re-steaming. You thought about adding more to your posts such as pics, gifs, audio or video? Just curious. Seems like you have great stuff to talk about but those things added may help your content stand out more.
BJJMike is my buddy, we train together.
Awesome. Glad to see us growing our community with people we know!
Jiu Jitsu Brother hood for life!
I actually tried to add a couple pics to this post and they didn't go through. I uploaded the pic, but I never hit the checkmark to add it to the post. Thanks for the constructive criticism for sure.
What app are you using? Steemit.com browser? Busy.org? eSteem mobile app?
I think steemit.com browser. What I have been doing is downloading pics from my computer to imagesafe.org and then I use the toolbar in steemit to upload the pic. I must of not hit the checkmark to save the image. Are you able to add pics after the post is already generated?
Yeah, the browser version is kinda weird. I think you can drag and drop pics now though. If you are using a 3rd party storage and want to insert the link, you can do that also. I use imgur, and you just have to be sure to get the markdown link.
You can also try eSteem for mobile on iOS and Android.
Busy.org also makes posting to steemit easier imo. You just login with your steemit account, it may ask for a different password, rather than your main password. Kinda like the posting key, or active key. You can find those in the wallet tab under permissions. You have to click to show the private key because the public key shows by default.
It's a little learning curve for the pics, but once you get it down it's easy. I think they need to make the process much easier like FB, Twitter or IG, and I'm sure they will.
Ego is huge in jiujitsu. Just go into any academy and watch the lowerbelts roll. I am guilty of it, I am a blue belt that give browns a run for their money and beat purple constantly. Do I secretly wonder when I will get promoted ? Yes and do I wonder why people I am better than” competition wise” get promoted yes.
I bet I’m not alone wondering..
I think there is good ego and bad ego, I seen black belts be real bad people dripping with self importance and I seen other black belts still be curious.
I think ego in jiujitsu can take you far and can be good in knowing ones worth but when it starts spilling over into other areas of your life there in lays the danger. I believe it’s unhealthy to see the world through a small lens and if someone happens to be excellent in bjj does not qualify them as excellent in all areas of life or worthy of worship. Inside the gym yes not outside I seen how some people “(I live in NY you can figure out what high profile black belts have been forced to leave their gyms here around ). “
How ego can harm also, like we are not what we accomplish on our mats.
I think ego and being humble has for me atleast have to do with the willingness to still be teachable and curious. Not be to hung up on accomplishments and realize that we are blessed to be able to train, it won’t last forever. Eventually our bodies will fail us. Bjj is a gift to us, not other way around.
Sorry for the book in answer and rambling.
You got me passionate ...
Yeah who you are as a person is definitely more than what you can do on some mat at the gym. Given I love Jiu Jitsu but you have to respect others regardless of the belt they wear. The white belt and black belt are both people and outside the gym you wouldn't know if they do Jiu Jitsu or not just walking by them. Maybe aside from Cauliflower ear..... but I definitely agree your ego plays into your growth and development on and off the mat. This was a cool response bigapplebo.
I think you're right. I don't know if ju-jitsu does anything to the ego. Most of the people I meet in ju-itsu think it's the best martial art, etc., so the self worth definitely goes up. But you're right, just treat everyone with respect and try to be the best you can be is the best attitude to have regardless of what you do. Well done.
thanks for viewing my post and taking time to comment. I followed you, and for sure will check out some of your posts @read3986
Thanks dude, I did a couple posts on martial arts but most on philosophy and some of my experience in investing. I've been doing martial arts for over 20 years and will be posting some more on that too stay tuned!
For sure I will, I'll check out some of your philosophy stuff. One of the thing I like about steem is that everything is kind of categorized for you. I think philosophy is a category I might find interest in. @read3986
Good Post. I can see where you're coming from. Im around 210-220 lbs and when I started it was like I got thrown in a shark tank with a concrete suit and raw meat around my neck. I'd get destroyed continuously by the smaller more advanced classmates. As time went on I finally caught on to the flow and now I'm able to catch them. Jiu Jitsu can humble you in a heart beat and give you the confidence to grow on the mat as well as a person in day to day life....that's what it did for me. Keeping your ego in check is very important in personal growth. I think you made a good point.
@bjjlifestyle thanks for taking time to read my post and comment. I am going to follow you as well and check out some of your posts.
Thank you for taking the time to share your post. Thanks for following me back. My post are going to start soon. I hope that everyone will enjoy the material I have to offer. I feel that if someone learns something or it helps somebody then I'm doing good. I'm in the process of purchasing my gear for recording video and photography.
Does not kill your ego when you bring home as many Medals as I do.
