FGM is Female Genital Multilation or Female Circumcision. It is the process of removing part or all of the female external genitalia. This barbaric act is practiced in some cultures for some reasons, such as; helping the lady retain her virginity till marriage (by killing her sexual urge), it makes her a woman, it is a tradition that must be adhered to etc.
Asides the fact that the girl goes through much pain during the operation without administered anaesthesia or analgesic inaddition to severe bleeding. She also suffers long term consequences like: anaemia, urinary tract infection, reproductive tract infection, painful sexual intercourse, chronic pelvic infection, easier transmission of HIV infection, infertility, problem in pregnancy and childbirth etc.
Why must a woman or girl go through such pain and trauma because of traditional or religious beliefs? A girl should not be treated like an animal because of an uncivilised tradition. This barbaric act must stop.

Thanks @funmi1. I was discussing with a friend today and he insisted that it should continue since it helps ladies to be chaste forgetting that when he marries such a woman, she will find it difficult to give him his marital rights (because what he derives pleasure from is painful to her).
