The STEEM Blockchain Is Scaling Up: News From The Developers!!!!!

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

The developers on the blockchain have been hard at work. It is often difficult to sit on the outside without any news. Many on here, including myself, complain about the lack of communication from the development team. Nevertheless, what they lack in communication skills they make up for with their programming skills.

We tend to often want to put the proverbial cart before the horse. Almost daily we talk about marketing, user names and increasing the people on this blockchain. This is an important part of the process yet the biggest thing is to be able to handle the traffic. Personally, I am guilty of believing that since we have one of the fastest blockchains, all is set. That is not the case.

@steemitdev put up a post last night announcing the next phase in the progression of this blockchain.

One of the issues they were tending to the last few months is that of scaling. That is something we see referred to with the Bitcoin blockchain since it is rather slow, especially when compared to STEEM. Yet it is an important factor when looking at the potential traffic that will arrive here. Of course, this is all back end stuff meaning that most of us non techie people miss it.

One of the biggest developments is that AppBase is ready which they would like everyone's help in testing.

What is AppBase?

AppBase is the first step in creating a multi-chain FABRIC. AppBase enables many components of the Steem blockchain to become modular by creating additional non-consensus blockchains as dedicated plugins. These plugins can be updated much more rapidly because they do not require replaying the entire blockchain.

Now comes the fun part. The development team needs everyone to help testing this out.

To do that, head over to steemitstage.com to use the site like normal. I am using steemitstage for this post. You can log in with your posting key if you want to ensure complete security.

Our staging environment includes the same security measures taken for steemit.com, and is considered pre-production. It's designed to be as close to the 'real' steemit.com as possible, in order to fully vet new code before it makes it to steemit.com. If you're still worried about using your keys, you're welcome to just use your posting key. Even if you don't login at all, just browsing the site and providing feedback to us is still useful.

The rest of the article is directed at developers so I won't go into that.

This is wonderful news. Actually, hearing anything out of the development team is outstanding. Nevertheless, this goes to show that pricing action does not tell the real story. While cryptocurrencies were behaving like a superball bouncing off a cliff, the development team was hard at work. It is comforting to know they realize what steps need to be taken to ensure this blockchain is one of the leading blockchains. Scaling the blockchain is crucial if we ever want to experience the growth many of us feel is possible.

I know I am guilty of getting impatient at times. That said, we need to remember that are a lot of highly-talented developers all over the STEEM ecosystem. They know what they are doing and want to make sure all works well before introducing it. AppBase is the first of many moves we will most likely see in the next couple months which moves us towards the completion of a number of additions that were mentioned last year (HF 20, Communities).

Some of the steps they were looking at taking were spelled out in this post...https://steemit.com/steemitdev/@steemitdev/steem-blockchain-update-august-2017

Part of the exponential growth we discuss on here applies to the back end of the house too. The development team making strides to upgrading the blockchain will only serve all of us down the road.

Good times are a-comin'.

This is great news! I've been waiting for communication for a long time, like why are we in "beta", what does non beta look like and when??

When I first came in Sep 2017, there were rumours that the actual version would be released Dec 2017, which obviously didn't happen and those rumours died out...

Also, I've written another article regarding the curation system I am proposing! Check it out here.

I'm sharing with you because you might be interested @taskmaster4450, I thank you for promoting my original article so please don't feel obligated to promote this one too, just have a read if you'd like!

The Steemit blockchain is a magic thing. I have to read the white paper in depth some day to fully understand it but I have to confess I haven't because of my eternal lack of time. I have the pdf saved on my kindle as a pending task...

Dan's work is just amazing, transactions on his blockchains combined have surpassed Bitcoin for a long time now so technically speaking the flippening already happened.

Speaking of traffic, check out daily views on Crypto Millionaire, it's hitting new records everyday!

Yes you should read the white paper...along with the Smart Media Token while paper....they both are very informative.

there is so much going on here that it amazing....I think @dan created a few blockchains that will be top 10.

Congrats on the traffic for daily millionaire.....my 2,000 times I check it per day is in that total.

Hey task,
I want you to be the first to see previews of the latest updates, little secret between you and me (and the forever existing Steem blockchain), there's no private messaging here. I should be publishing tonight. regards

Hey my friend...thanks for the insider info.

Now if you can just tell me what Telsa stock is going to do ...

You can always hit me up on steemit.chat or discord taskmaster4450 #9768 (for some reason there are two accounts).

I believe Zappl is in the process of implementing a private messenger on their app. We shall see.

As for the updates, those are great...creating a one stop shop for all crypto news. I never realized how many Iphone are out there since everyone I bring the app up to has an Iphone.

Any idea when the updates will be released.

Hi Task, The Android updates will be up tonight, barring any catastrophic bugs that shows up in the next few hours. I'm very excited about and will be using the new feautures myself, in particular the new filters, quite a lot.

The IOs developer is either quite slow, doesn't get the app, or is just wasting my time. I'm going to have to get someone else :( Hopefully he brings me some results over the week-end. Someone said that if you want to do something right you have to do it yourself but I just don't have the time right now and haven't done IOs apps in a while.

I understand...I wish I could help...my extent of programming is that I can spell programming.

The updates look very good...I cant wait to see it....you are going to have me living on that app. LOL

Hi Task, I haven't much time but this is a picture of me just minutes ago as the update was published :)

I'll try to write about the updates tomorrow here, hope the twins let me. We also have a visit the grandparents tomorrow so the day will be short...

Summary of updates:

Paid option to remove ads
Latest news feeds for each coin
Advanced search and filtering for coins
Many improvements under the hood for stability

I'm one of the newer kids on the block (chain) and am avidly seeking information. This post caught my eye since I posted an astrological view of steemit recently. I appreciate your efforts to keep us infomed thanks. RESTEEMED

The issue of blockchain scalability is often seen in technical discussions on Steemit. Blockchain scalability is an essential set of issues that must be tackled as blockchain technologies become more popular. AppBase maybe the solution for Steem’s ability to scale. Let's wait and see the improvements made in the next weeks.

There surely are some incredible minds working behind the scenes here for us all and I thank them all for their valuable work.

Backend is probably more important than front as the cogs need to turn faultlessly for folks to engage but here I wrote my frontend functionality wishlist ~ which, if any codeweavers care to look at, would be rather groovy!

Great post as usual.

xox

Backend is probably more important than front as the cogs need to turn faultlessly...

I agree..with a user interface that is amazing, if the back end if garbage, it will not be a site people use. Attracting people to a site is one thing...but if there are continuous issues like bugs and slowness, people will leave.

So I am all for the back end being up to par before making a major push. We are starting to see things happening as we speak. Over time, each improvement will build upon the other.

Thank you for your comment.

I am actually going to try that website soon. It is good to know that Steem programmers are scaling things. Recently we have been at a very fast rate. We are having like 50000 new members every week. This is big. Very big. Thus i think their efforts of scaling this blockchain definitely benefits all of us.

I agree @themobilewriter.

If there is no scaling, the only thing all those people do is flood the site and kill it. We need to have a smooth running website. The developers focusing upon that, at this time, makes sense. The next hard fork will automate the sign up approval process...that could really speed things up. Need the site running well before that happens.

It's always great news to hear that the steemit developers are making changes to advance the platform. I know nothing about development, IT or the things that happen behind the scenes.

Sure, we'd all like to see some changes coming and new website options, etc and as my father always tells me... "just wait... things will happen".

Yes @goldendawne.

It is hard to wait for things to happen...especially when stuff is so exciting. Blockchain is new and really going to change things. That said, events need to unfold in a proper order. If the back end is not optimal and scaling is an issue, then attracting all the people in the world is only going to kill this place. They will show up and then leave.

As we progress forward, both technologically and with users, there can be a nice balance of new features and blockchain improvement.

Using the test site, it is a lot faster.

events need to unfold in a proper order

I can see how it would have to be this way; and can appreciate the work that goes into all the behind the scenes advancement.

I just sit back, wait (some days more impatiently than others) and watch. Soon I know things will come to light and all the new attributes of the platform will be unveiled.

Yes, I'd read about the AppBase too - it is good news.

But surely, if the devs need the community to adopt something (like testing new scalability), where they need a good number of users to "live test", there should be a more efficient way of letting the community know.

Even if 10 well-meaning users, such as @taskmaster4450, write posts about the need for live testing, they'll reach a tiny percentage of the community, with only a small percentage of those reached actually taking the time to login to the new platform.

Surely, being developers of the platform, they could put up a highlighted bar (or something similar) at the top of the steemit website, calling for the help of the community and linking to instructions as to what they'd like us to do. This wouldn't be difficult at all - it's a change to the website coding, not the blockchain.

By putting the information front-and-centre, in a place where the majority of the community would see it, theyy're much more likely to have the community act how they need it to.

Thanks to you, though @taskmaster4450 for trying to do your part and spreading this info to your audience.

I would presume you are right...the more the merrier.

They are looking for bugs which means the more people doing stuff, the more flaws that are uncovered.

That is an excellent idea, putting a banner at the top telling everyone to try it.

Sadly, some developers, while great at code, simply do not think as you do...they get so focused upon the tree they miss the forest. Of course, this might be why they are great developers....they can stare at code for hours.

Me, I am so adhd, I am bouncing around from page to page all the time.

So bandwidth will improve?
