STEEM Ready To Kick It Into High Gear: Hivemind (Communities) Set To Go Live!!!!

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

We were anxiously awaiting some developments coming out of Steemit. It appears that some of our wait is almost over.

The Hivemind feature is going to come out in two parts.

First, we have Hive 1.0.

This is the core and, quite frankly, the boring aspect of the process. However, this is crucial for the test of compatibility and load issues. Up to this point, all the functions that this will handle are done by STEEMD.

The core indexer and API service are nearing completion. Because this is critical infrastructure, we need to ensure reliability and consistency. Currently, work is focused on launching the production environment and tuning performance. Then we begin integration and API testing. Once stable, condenser (powering steemit.com) will be switched over to the new hive endpoints; if everything is integrated properly, users will not notice a thing. It’s akin to upgrading an airplane engine mid-flight while making sure there are no hiccups and all controls work as usual.

After that we get Hive 1.5.

This is the communities function. It is where interaction will be done on a completely different level.

The key thing to understand about the Hivemind concept is it makes development much easier. The present system does not allow C++APIs plus all code changes need to go through review since they take place on the consensus level. With Hivemind, we will have a develop friendly layer on top of the blockchain itself, bypassing the full nodes for the information.

Also, this is open source which means any developer can utilize it. The goal is going to be a consistent user experience.

Along with the communities idea, we see these features:

  • reactions, bookmarks
  • comment on resteems
  • indexing of custom profile data
  • reorganizing of old posts (categorize, filter, hide/show)
  • voting/polls (democratic or burn/send to vote)
  • modlists: (e.g. spam, abuse, bad taste)
  • crowdsourced metadata
  • mentions indexing
  • full-text search
  • rich statistics
  • follow lists
  • bot tracking
  • mini-games
  • community bots
  • and much more

The post put out by the developers adds some more details but I think I hit upon the keys points.

This is exciting news. The fact that it is in Alpha stage and they are running their first test means we are getting very close to the blockchain forking. Once that happens, we will see a totally new STEEM with new features that really enhance the user experience.

Perhaps we need to delay the death of STEEM talk a while longer.

I think I'm most looking forward to the modlist. Hopefully that means that spammers and scammers can get shut down without having to go through the extended downvoting process to get them below 0.

Ok, I'll move my "death of Steem" date out by 2 weeks. ;) Ha ha

Those are some pretty nice features there and I am wondering how people will adapt to them and integrate it into the Discord communities that we have now.

Perhaps we need to delay the death of STEEM talk a while longer.

I hope you are right :) . My thoughts have remained nothing but positive for the future of Steem, but who knows maybe that's just my unconditional optimism for the platform. I've heard a lot of talk about other blockchains competing with Steemit. Have you any thoughts on any of these? Good or bad? Thanks, as always for a great article :)

My thoughts are blockchains are like roads. As long as there is traffic, one is not going to pick up and move one's business across town.

EOS certainly is going to be a dynamite system according to what I read about it. There will be many blockchains created using that OS. From what I understand, parts of EOS can be integrated into other blockchains. Will that happen with STEEM? Who knows.

There will most certainly be other social media platforms to arise. Will they be any better than STEEM? We shall see. The communities feature could really make the experience on here much more advanced.

Even if another site opens up, that does not mean it what is on here. Look at D.Tube and the work that went into that...someone is not reproducing that overnight. Could it happen over time? Sure.

But again, if this blockchain has sites and applications people are using, like the traffic on a road, even if it isnt the newest, fastest or best, there still are a lot of people driving by.

I'm excited for these features you're listing.

Thanks for covering this info in your posts and keeping us up to date as always.

very good news for us. I like where this is going, much of these improvements to be incorporated are aspects which I have noticed need either improved upon or simply integrated into the platform in order to make this experience more user-friendly and easier to navigate for newbies.

Great info as usual, thanks for sharing @taskmaster4450 .... also looking forward to your name challenge via @preparedwombat I will be on the lookout for that post as well

steem on

Brilliant stuff here @taskmaster4450, thanks for the update this will be amazing when implemented!

I'm very much looking forward to seeing this in action. I truly think it could garner a lot of interest in Steem. The more interested the better obviously. I think $10 steem is not far off and $20 steem is even in the visible distance.

It seems like no one talks about the Blockchain development a lot, but I guess there isn't much to talk about. It's like "we are adding X, and fixing Y." Maybe more talk about what the devs want to come out of these additions could help break up the radio silence.

It is great to see development on the Steemit website focusing on Communities. I can't wait to see the difference in using the newly interfaced Steemit.com! Upvoted!
