The reality is this: The wider the wealth gap in societies, the more mental and physical health declines.
I have never encountered anyone claiming to even want to build a social structure or society where everyone is equal. I have heard many state what you did but people dont actually advocate that. We should be aware that as the gap widens so does mental and physical health issues.
What I think is going on is people do not want to face up to psychological impact that abuse (even flags) can have on individuals, the platform and Steem. I suggest that reason people may not want to face up to is they may feel that they should do something about it and could damage their progress.
Behind most accounts is a human being with hopes, dreams, aspirations and a very real need for social connections.
I agree that there is good case to be made in favor of some flags. That is a different topic
It seems many who complain of being supposedly censored are advocating for all stake to be equal. It's like they don't grasp how a stake based system works.
I wouldn't use the word abuse so much as a flexing of power when a disagreement is there. I do agree with you that to various degrees it can impact a person. dependent on what attachments their illusions have binded to themselves. But that is a personal magnetism that they play the central part in holding.
I agree, but not in regards to a social platform where the draw for many seems to be crumbs that may or may not one day hold some value. I know if I found a place disagreeable, it would find its way quickly into my never again list.
It seems to me several of those who find themselves (not all of course) on the receiving end of these flags usually are posting very controversial topics, often again in an attacking way towards people in general who may hold the opposing view. You can't just post here throwing verbal rocks around and think those who fit the description and hold more power might not throw something back.
Thank you for a well thought out comment. I do want to clarify that there have been several I follow who have been recipients of just such tactics, as well as at times my interactions with them on their posts. I understand that it can suck.
Not from what I've seen.
People have been heavily downvoted for suggesting that "I tried veganism and it didn't seem to work well for me". Others have been downvoted for having a full downvote meter (you're not downvoting enough so you're not doing your part to protect the community standards)!!!
If you scare off all the carnivores and nice people who don't believe in downvoting, what the heck is steem going to look like?
Can't they just use the MUTE function if they don't want to read someone's stuff?
Thanks for weighing in. I need to clarify a few things for you, as at times my presentation is made without much of my personality in it (detached if you would).
When I say controversial, I don't mean I necessarily hold the topic as controversial. It is an acknowledgement that others for whatever do. Many of the posts I have seen targeted seem to involve name calling (My circles are small here as I have always held myself to the amount of votes I have to give in thanks).
As for topics that others consider controversial would be topics such as:
The list could go on, but I think that is sufficient and many understand what those triggered by such topics hold in common. Those who target such conversations, in my opinion, are actually bolstering the ideas that triggered them to lash out. It displays an unwillingness to hold a relevant discussion on the pros and cons, and indicates to impartial third parties witness to such an act that one side of the spectrum feels their position is weak.
I also would interject that when people see a post greyed out, on top of the message I pointed out above, it also would pull people in out of curiosity as to why someone would try to sabotage the message in question. At this point, if the OP has presented their message in a coherent manner, it could elicit either agreement, or someone who holds an opposing position who is not afraid of presenting their idea of the facts. This latter type of possibility is gold in my opinion, as it gives more reference points to consider to those of us who are interested yet either undecided. Or better, see facts we were unaware of and understand we held ignorance on the matter that now demands further information. And lastly, maybe more unreasonable people weigh in and call names, further strengthening the OP regardless of whether they are correct or not, because they are meeting an onslaught of triggered assholes.
I also didn't mean to imply that all flags would meet the criteria most would hold as reasonable. Not only have I witnessed those, but have been the recipient myself for the crime of upvoting posts, interacting on posts and receiving support from others being targeted.
What I never did in those circumstances is get angry enough to forget that this is a stake system which by its very definition allows for this. I didn't post about the flags. One time I even thanked the powerful whale who let me know I was on their list, telling them there was no better endorsement than being on their list.
It comes down at the end of the day as to whether one feels strongly enough about their message and conduct. Comes down to whether this one social site is worthy of anger over a few crumbs of crypto. A person I consider my benefactor here was actually banned for some time from Steemit, many of his bots still are. Yet despite that ban, he never stopped supporting others here and still seeks whats best for the site. He stood up to many who were a lot more powerful than his considerable stake, and has never once posted a complaint post that I have seen. I consider this is due to his understanding what a stake system not just allows, but encourages.
In ending, I want to say none of this is to say a dick move isn't a dick move. But this system allows for dick moves, just as life itself does. In a perfect world there wouldn't be dick moves.

That's a hell of an assumption that looks a lot more like, an excuse at best, denial at worst. You are actually under the impression that people are trying to 'make money' by posting very unpopular, against the grain, topics....

It actually makes perfect sense. Since however it does not to you, then we are able to see why it is you think the way you do. You are both in denial, and making excuses. You suggest people to change their subject matter so that they aren't rendered penniless and hidden. Acting like they are crybabies and easily dismissing them so that you can continue course without reflection.

Look around. The house has crumbled. Most of those who disagree with your premise, are gone. I am only here for the splinterlands/NextColony, and to support some small minnows that are still trying to get the truth out, but less and less so as my interest continues to wane.
Do you know why I don't bother putting more time/energy or my writings here on this platform? Because of the Downvoting. Because one large stakeholder can just, hide it and remove any payout, with a click, no matter how well it was written. No matter how truthful or important it is. One downvote is all it takes to undo all that. If you don't understand why that makes for a non-desirable outcome, then you are in fact, part of the problem.

You misunderstand my non emotional description of what is as an excuse for it. Longing for something better while continuing to utilize the system that is created to allow for just such action isn't logical. It reminds me of people who demand a place in the Christian church while living a lifestyle that is condemned by the book they demand to be a part of. I can get why they would be adamant against the structure that says they are to be handled/viewed a certain way. What I don't get is why they insist on being part of that system while demanding everyone pretend that it isn't what it is.
To myself, that is the true denial.
