Notice How You Get Fewer Votes When an Autovoting Service is Down?

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

Did you notice yesterday how you might have received less votes and potential payout value? That's because the SteemAuto service was down.

It revealing how much the platform depends on automated services, and not on human behavior for voting and curation on a social media site. Are non-human actions really "social"? I think not. But we most of us benefit from it, and it's not going anywhere... even if it's an issue for some.

A post from @crokkon a few days ago called What is the reward pool share of vote sellers, bid bots and autovotes? shows how much of the platform is being run by autovotes, and not social human behavior from consciousness.

Here are vote counts and vote values in rshares (stake) from those votes.

WhoVotesValue
Steemauto auto-votes41.17%6.81%
Steemdunk auto-votes1.50%0.26%

That means nearly half all all votes are coming from autovotes. But It's less than 7% of the stake. So even though most of the voting on the platform is automated (which is sad if you think about it), it's not where most of the rewards are coming from.

Where are most of the rewards coming from? It looks like manual votes still account for the most amount of rewards being allocated on the platform through the stake of those votes. But the vote sellers account for nearly 30% of the rewards being applied on posts on the whole platform, yet they only make up 1% of the votes being case, as shown below:

WhoVotesValue
Bid-bots/paid bots1.03%28.17%

Take that in.

42% of the votes on the platform are from autovote services. But they only account for Under 7% of the rewards being allocated.

1% of the votes on the platform are from vote selling bots. But they account for a whopping 28% of rewards being allocated.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

I personally only curate manually at the moment because I feels like it means a little more if I vote that way. I do admit that I heavily rely on auto votes from some individuals and a few other things that I am a part of so I definitely feel a little sting when that happens lol.

I never really used bidbots (unless sbi counts, I have been buying people shares of that when I think that they deserve more than I can give with my tiny upvotes). I think I tried an actual one or two of the super cheep ones when I first started on the site but then I saw that people were making a good case against using them for ethical reasons and I decided that they were probably right about that.

I don't know what the answer is. For my part, I do try to reward the people who I know curated my posts manually with the resources I have available (my vote isn't worth much but I will go engage with a person's content if I can). That won't make much of a dent in things here but If enough of us do it, it might give more people a reason to go out and engage with each other.

Manual for the win! :) Bitbots definitely are the worst. Nobidbot revolution! lol

Hey @krnel, big thanks for the wrap-up and mention!

Both metrics, the ~42% auto-votes by number and the ~28(+5?)% paid votes by value, should be seen as lower boundaries. My analysis could not capture all, because the method I used cannot distinguish all auto-/paid votes from "human" votes. So the reality is likely to be "worse", but the numbers at least give a feeling for the orders of magnitude.

Yeah it may not be all, but at least it gives a good idea :/

A really clever piece of work by @crokkon. Unfortunately it's harder to pinpoint votes made by Steemvoter, and as this service is one of the oldest (I use it), I suspect there is a reasonable number of votes, and some of the larger stakes are using this service.

I think automating a % of your voting is ok, but it's nice to have some spare for the new/interesting stuff that you find, and of course, the comments of worth that appear on posts :)

As another user put it, automation removes engagement unless you go through all the posts to see what is worth commenting on ;)

I don't get auto votes so saw no difference myself, lol. I don't think I could use one either. I prefer curating manually, although there are some like yourself who I know it is going to be top notch quality. But sometimes i have to wait due to voting power as well. Someday though I will have enough voting power I will be able to post daily and curate all the posts worthy that I have time for.

Yeah with manual votes at least u can pick what to upvote and choose different percentage if you want to spread it around one day, and amp it up the other when there are fewer posts.

I did not notice a change in my upvotes. I do not believe I get too many if any autovotes. They seem to be real. Thanks @krnel.

I belive autovoting reduces engagemwnt as well...many people follow certain curation trail and do not get chance to interact with other..

Yeah, autobot activity isn't really social media activity.. :/

It makes user lazy to see what going on around

Meh, I'm pretty sure the 5 or 6 votes i get per day are the real deal.....except for them steemit badge comment thingys, those are sketchy as hell.
;)

that is a fair amount but 65% of rewards that remain must be manually distributed so that keeps the human factor in play for now.

Its alive for now indeed...

it does make you wonder where the tipping point is.

I have already been away from Stemmit for like 2 months. And came back to check that there is still nothing going on about these bots. I will keep an eye on other crypto platforms being developed right now.

Nothing will ever be done about the bots...

Although its fuky for the system, I actually really appriciate auto voting. This summer has been crazy busy for me and I have not been posting or voting much at all. Luckily, Steemauto has been around for me and has been using up my voting power when I do not have the time or energy to manually curate. Once it gets cold again I am sure I will switch back to manual curation, but for now I appricate being able to spread my votes to my favorite content creators without having to spend hours everyday online!

Hehe the cold to make you curate ;) It helps to use vote power, but you could spend 1 hour each day to choose the posts to manually curate too.

I think it depends on priorities. I love Steemit, but I am not that dedicated when the real world whirls around me. I often need that extra one hour to chill the fuck out hahaha. In the winter it is different though, when I only have indoor things to do.
