How does it make sense to upvote yourself?
I'm new to Steemit and can't believe you're allowed to upvote your own comments or posts and actually get rewarded for this. So dumb or lazy users who don't know or care for this trick are undermined? How many other tricks are there in steem for those "in-the-know" to hog all of the rewards? How can we trust there won't me a ton of forks in the future to redistribute all the power onto the enlightened ones?

I also found this weird when I first came here, but not that it technologically exists but that people really seem to use it. It was already uncool on facebook to like own posts right after posting them haha :)

hahaha.. The idea of this community is to have a good content and to attrack Audience, there audience keep up to date with you with every post, and You will make more than "Liking you.. " Never mind.
If you upvoted your self daily you will be making around 4% to 8% a month.
I do prefer to Upvote all my Blog Post and not my comments. so in this way i can keep my voting power so high.

How does choosing what to upvote keep your voting power high? I don't understand voting power ):
I doesnt matter what you upvote.
But its better to Upvote just your blog posts. And voting other people posts as most obvisuly you will get upvoted back from people as saying thanks from them. And image that someone with Thousands of SteemPower upvoted you. So you will earn more and more than your $0.01 vote.
Actually, there is another "trick".... Use the app "esteem" if you post or comment trough this app, your first 5 posts or comments will get +-8 upvoted with totally value of +- 0.75USD worth! + It is a really nice app, you could choose the % of your voting power u use while upvoting, add posts as a bookmark and get notifications of someone follows you, upvoted you or flaggs you... ;-)
eSteem both for mobile and desktop sucks right now though, not working.
