For the people of Aceh, adat is a wisdom that must be maintained, preserved, and applied as part of the norm of life. The high values of adat in Aceh society are also reflected in planting.
For example in the opening of land for cultivation, in Aceh there are a number of rules that have lived and developed since ancient times. The rules are like a forest logging procedure that should not cut down the large timber where the bees are nesting. This has become a common taboos which, if violated, can harm people.
Farmers in Aceh, in cultivation also have their own stages adapted to the Aceh calendar called keununun or keunong. In carrying out agriculture in rice fields or known as meugo blang, there is advice of people of Aceh (hadih maja) that reads; Keunong siblah tabu jareung, keunong sikureung taboo average, keuj Tujoh pih jeut mantong, keongong limong caterpillar seuba. This advice (Hadih maja) tells the story of when to start sowing seeds and when should not be done. Farmers in Aceh are quite familiar with this advice.
Local wisdom in Aceh is also contained in the ban on cutting trees at a radius of about 500 meters from the shore of the lake, 200 meters from the edge of the springs and left-right rivers on the swamp area, about 100 meters from the left-right bank of the river, about 50 meters from the edge of the child river (alue).
All these rules have become the customary institution of a region, in order to maintain the sustainability of nature and the people in the area. If these rules are violated, the Forest Commander (panglima uteuen) as an adat institution is entitled to impose sanctions on the offenders because the impact will be on many communities, such as the flood and the decline of wild animals into the settlement.
This custom seems to be set aside so that all the rules that have been sustainable in the indigenous community are considered a myth. Like Advice (Hadih Maja) following:
tanoh sihèt u timu heirloom jeurat / sihèt u west heirloom papa / sihèt u tunong geulantan / sihèt u seulatan rich heirloom 'land tilted to east heirloom grave / tilted to western heirloom papa (poor) / tilt northward land victory / rich'.
Of the wisdom depicted in the hadih maja may be regarded as a made-up myth or an added confidence. In fact, the meaning of these words of wisdom clearly implies how important the location of the slope of the soil and the influence on the planting, because it involves the cycle of sunlight in the process of assimilated plants.
Is not Permaculture concept initiated by Bill Mollison also through local wisdom approach?
