Red-crowned crane
This tall bird has a dramatic appearance, with a white body and black neck and tail feathers. It gets its name from the red patch of feathers on top of its head. There are only two major populations of this crane left in the wild — one group lives year-round in Japan and the other spends the summer in Siberia and northern China before migrating to South Korea for the winter. It's a protected and important bird in South Korea — there’s even a traditional folk dance called the Crane Dance!
