I still don't fully understand how Steemit generates anything from posts, but I'm fairly sure the number of posts does not really make a difference to anything - it's the upvotes and comments they receive that generate whatever it is and poor quality posts will obviously generate little of this and just fall by the wayside. The problem as I see it is when you generate a post which you feel is of good quality - it is lost in an ocean of poor quality and spammy posts which mean the chances of anyone seeing it that would like it are reduced greatly. The feed of people you follow aids this, but even this gets cluttered. I'm not really sure what the solution is, maybe a downvote option which runs on a three downvote system and the post only shows on tag views to take it out main streams - but then that would be open to abuse by posters with a grudge - it's a tough call.
