my biggest advise is engagement. you can give 11, 100% upvotes a day. i recommend trying to use them and making a comment as to why you liked it.
another little trick...but honestly i would wait just a bit to do it. is to do a full intro to who you are and what you hope to bring to / get out of steemit. the #introduceyourself is a sure way to get some upvotes. my advice would be to put out a bit of content first and do it in a month. look at other people introduceyourself posts and craft one that fits for you.
going onto steemit chat can also be good. another way to meet people and learn...or just muck about.
my last advice is just keep putting out content...quality to you is what i would say. do you like it. would you want to read it? good questions to ask yourself. i wish you luck.
