RE: The Steem-Pocalypse Show Episode 3 for Season 6

I am going to search the abandoned lot.

  • It's not actually a field, but a lot, which means that while it may look like a field there used to be something there and that often means unexpected treasures (like a good pair of pliers I once found). I also know that most people see things like purslane and sow's thistle as a complete weed (not to mention Queen Anne's Lace or wild carrot) and don't think to try to eat it before they're fighting over scraps of twinkies and beef jerky. So the abandoned lot has the highest likelihood of having some food available. I am not particularly concerned about it being open because it's broad daylight and you therefore have a good chance of hearing or seeing anyone coming. It also seems more like a commercial area than residential and those kinds of areas become abandoned first, with people pulling back to apartment buildings and neighborhoods when stressed.

  • The cars would've been my next choice. If there are abandoned/crashed cars, it may mean someone panicked and left some good stuff there. However, if there's been looting for two months I think there may've been plenty of people before us who had that idea. I would think you might get some things besides food out of the cars but have a suspicion there wouldn't be any food. As you guys pointed out, there may be another opportunity for food tomorrow...or there may not be.

  • The grocery store has a possibility of yielding something besides food but I've seen the pictures of what grocery stores in Venezuela look like right now and I don't think there's a crumb left big enough for a mouse in there. You might find some other things of value for survival but again...unless there's a package of something hidden under a counter or something, it seems likely to not only be abandoned but possibly unsafe to eat anything from considering the sewers have been backed up for two months and who knows what the floors are like in there.

So...there's my thoughts. I'm specifically hoping to find purslane, as Ben mentioned, since it grows everywhere (and gets big fast), has a hugely high nutritional content (especially if you can get those good Omega 3s from the seeds), and is so low-growing and innocuous most people think of it like grass and wouldn't bother to eat it. You also don't have to cook it like you sometimes have to with other wild greens because it's not bitter at all and is very easy to eat and digest.
