RE: First question that comes to mind when looking at a new place

Does the network of fiber in a given area determine the speeds? My friend got fiber in his area in California and he said it was slower than cable but might have been due to the fact that the fiber network in his area wasn't extensive. Which made me confused because I always thought fiber to be faster than cable.

Hmm, it definitely should be faster, although they put speed limits here depending on what sort of subscription you have. But the most costly thing is if there is no fiber to begin with and they have to specially dig the lines to you, that's why its important to know if the building you consider moving into has it installed from before or not.

A friend of mine did it recently for his house and it cost him over 2500$ for the installation.

We had it installed at our office! It took a while for it to get installed after going back forth with the association talking about an easement of 3 feet. Luckily the company installed it on their dime and not ours! They said it was around $25,000 for the distance they need to string it..

Yeah I know! But they have the only pipe in our complex for fiber! They said that it would be paid off in about 5 years depending on how many of our of neighbors they get!

I might have misunderstood him when he was explaining it. I think it was the subscriptions he had. I did know about the high cost of running the fiber. Im on on cable right now but I definitely want to make the switch to fiber. Thank you for the clarification.

It shouldn't be that expensive once you have it running - its mostly the installment.
