It's almost always good to put agreements in writing, even casual ones with friends, if there are any real stakes involved. Otherwise it is just asking for miscommunications or mis-rememberings
you are right. fortunately now even casual arrangement we have the whatsapp or wechat where we can retrieve history to make clear what would be otherwise unclear. I am a lawyer, we actually record phone conversation but we tell our client first. That is so that verbal instruction can be recorded and used as proof.
