Today's pick is a called MUNCHERY

MUNCHERY is a startup delivering handmade meals, cooked by top local chefs with highest-quality ingredients. They deliver to your home or office every day, on demand.

101 Startups is back after 10 episodes!!
FTR, My agenda was busy, and will continue to be busy until the end of October (many speeches in tech conferences to prepare), but I will take the time to write a couple episodes. I sincerely hope you enjoy this series and discover new services. Please let me know if you try some of the startups presented!

HOW IT WORKS

Pretty basic: You either use an app, or their internet site. Today, I’ll focus on the website for the sake of the visuals (screenshots) and will give you a tour of their services.

Munchery follows a simple 3 steps process:

  • 1- they create food, with the freshest ingredients
  • 2- you pick in the menu what you want
  • 3- you get delivered

The fact that they cook specific menus on certain days allows them to pick the ingredients in advance and to choose the meals to make sure to use local ingredients and season vegetables for instance.

Your first step after having set up your account is ….to decide what to eat!
Simply log in to the site and start by choosing the day you wish to be delivered food (top menu).

Here, I am choosing something for Friday.

It will update the list of meals available. The list of meals is diverse and you can choose between approximately 15 prepared meals. You can also choose to cook your own food (10 “boxes” available).

The latter "boxes" are called ”Cooking kits” and allow you to prepare a meal for 2 in 15 minutes. I never tried it, but some acquaintances who used this service told me that it was fairly easy to make and very good. Basically, it’s so simple that you cannot miss the cooking part (sauces are made, you basically re-heat and combine ingredients)

I am lazy today… so let’s choose already made meals.
As you can see there is also a filter option, so you can choose to eat gluten-free (if you have Celiac disease), no nuts, no eggs, vegan…

You can also add beverages to you meal, with a choice of wines and other Kombucha (if you live in California) or Iced coffee (NOLA Style…). As for the meals, choices are quite vast, and I chosed to highlight only 4 items for the sake of visibility.

Munchery also proposes desserts, albeit these tend to have some success and are often sold out ;-).

The navigation on the site is ultra-simple: you click on the meals, beverages or desserts you want and add them to your cart.

Checkout, put your address and time of delivery and you are done. Someone will soon drop the food at your door.

BOTTOM LINE:

Munchery is perfect if you don’t have time to cook diner and if you want to eat healthy. Prices are very reasonable for delivery services.

Ideal If you work from home and don’t want to cook diner (or if your company only reimburses restaurants). It will save you some time, and will allow you to eat probably healthier than in your favorite Taqueria down the road. Gluten free, fat free, whatever free addicts will also like the fact that you can filter your selection and get stuff that won’t kill you…

The fact that Munchery relies on the local food ecosystem (cooks, ingredients) is also a major plus today. CO2 is not visible in our plates, but is a real pollution.

Conclusion: Process is simple, meals are high-quality, with fresh ingredients, selection is good enough and service excellent. What more do you need ?

Now I want pesto salmon...stat.

An interesting one! There is an explosion of cooking kits startups now and maybe if this one offers something different (like this option with a prepared meal), they can compete on the market

In the next days I will review Instacart. It's a cool one too.

Funny things: All these guys work with Uber, Lyft and so on. This new economy starts to generates its own ecosystem to maximize efficiency of operations (using Uber = no need to hire delivery ppl oor to get them cars)

Pretty cool world :)

That's cool, I didn't know! Here in The US it's probably the best thing to do with all the crazy charge rates for hiring additional personnel.
Looking forward to your new posts;)

Thanks!

I should be back in NYC in the beginning of December for a speech at a conference on AI (TBC). I hope I will discover more startups there!

That's great! Let me know, I might be interested to join )
