GKK: The new KFC of Assam

in #startups6 years ago

Do you know that KFC is the second largest restaurant chain in the world by sales after McDonald's? KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, an entrepreneur who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. Sanders identified the potential of restaurant franchising, and the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" franchise opened in Salt Lake City. At present KFC has more than 18,875 outlets in 118 countries and territories around the world.

Well, this post is not about KFC. But a similar story with same motive in rural Assam. GKK also known as Gaon Ka Khana, is a food restaurant chain that specializes in ethnic foods. Hironmoy Gogoi and his team started this journey in early 2016 in a small town Sivasagar. In a short span of time GKK has expanded its roots in nearby towns Dibrugarh and Jorhat. The idea came to his mind when he found it was difficult to find food which is healthy and has the same taste as cooked by a mother. As the name says the taste of village food and brings it to an affordable price where a person working away from his home can have the same taste as cooked by a mother. The uniqueness of this startup, home taste food which can be ordered both online and offline.

Recently I interviewed Hironmoy Gogoi (founder of GKK) and asked about his journey and future plan which you can read here. Hironmoy seems to very positive about his startup and he wants to open more franchise across the state. In a recent talk with him, he has also informed about people calling from UP, Punjab looking for franchises.

GKK is one of such thousands of rural startups who are innovative at the same time catering thousands of jobs across the country. They have been growing without the exposure from conventional media.

In the future, there is a lot to see innovations from rural areas. Media is more focused on big cities like Bangalore, Delhi. We should not deny the fact that innovations can be from anywhere.

We should encourage more rural entrepreneurship

Media seems to be more attracted to big startups where is crores of funding from investors. While the most of the country population lives in the rural area. The rural entrepreneurship happens to affect more lives.

Encouragement and supports should be there for these rural entrepreneurs so that they come to limelight. Investors should know that there is innovation in the villages.

Why do I see more opportunities in the villages?

Today's villages are no more villages like old villages. New age villages are connected with social media and the Internet. As Internet penetration is increasing we are going to see more and more startups coming from rural India.

I see young innovative minds in the villages and they only lack is opportunities. If they are provided with all the opportunities and support they need, we will see them flourishing. Unemployment hauling in the villages can be substantially reduced.

GKK is one such example. If they get love, support from the media and the public who can stop them. Let me know what's your thought on this.
