Pole Position surprised Hamilton
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton did not think could seize the leading start in the Hungarian GP. Given Ferrari's fine performance throughout the free practice.
Under the rain, Hamilton managed to snatch pole position in qualifying session at Hungaroring Circuit on Saturday (28/7). The dominance of Mercedes was confirmed after Valtteri Bottas finished second in the second.
Meanwhile, Ferrari must be satisfied in the second row. Kimi Raikkonen will start in third, ahead of teammate Sebastian Vettel.
A disappointing result for the Prancing Horse. The reason, Vettel can always surpass the fastest Mercedes cars in three free exercises that run dry.
"Quite surprising, really," Hamilton revealed in Autosport. "I did not expect to get a pole, so grateful for today."
"It could be 1-2, especially when we know we will not get pole here in dry conditions, because Ferrari is too fast, but we're all just trying to do the best job we can, and maybe locking up the second row."
"So over the heavy rain and for us to be in this position, it's really a blessing for us," Hamilton concluded.
