Australian Rules Football - the best sport in the world?

If like me, you grew up in the heart of Victoria, you would know that Aussie Rules is not just a sport here, it's a part of life, it's culture, it's the ice-breaker when you meet someone new. "So what club do you follow?" This is usually understood as referring to which Aussie Rules AFL team you follow. And if you don't have a team you follow, you would usually get blank stares. "What, are you new to town?"

I remember when I first arrived in Australia when I was primary school age. My primary school teacher gave me a Hawthorn Football Club scarf. Unfortunately I didn't have any friends back then who supported them, so I didn't decide to follow them either. But later when I got exposed to AFL more and more, I made the decision to support the mighty Essendon Bombers! It was the era when the Bombers dominated, and in 1993 they won the Premiership.

This year the Bombers are not doing so well, but I've supported them through the ups and lows, and that's what makes sport special. I remember when the Western Bulldogs won the Premiership a couple of years ago. It was truly emotional stuff. They hadn't won a premiership for around 50 years, and there were supporters who had supported them their entire lives and it was their first taste of a premiership after decades of disappointments.
