Famous Manchester United Teams of the Past...

in #sportstalk5 years ago

Luckily with English football being so ingrained in everyday life coupled with a strong British film industry Manchester United fans young and old can enjoy some excellent films produced solely for their most famous teams of the past. I am of course referring to specific two periods in history and both movies were released with two years of each other.

The first period is the late 50s featuring one of the greatest managers the sport has ever known, Sir Matt Busby and the young Busby Babes he had built from the youth team that won the title in 56 and 57 before looking to challenge for the European Cup. Of course after the Munich plane disaster in 58 that wiped out much of his team Busby had to rebuild again from scratch and rebuild he did. He built a new team with the few players left from the disaster (including Bobby Charlton and Bill Foulkes) which would prove victorious winning two leagues and culminating in winning tbe European Cup a decade later.

The second period being the 90s and Sir Alex Fergusons team so reminiscent of the late 50s one. For many here at Sports Talk this team will still be fresh in their minds as a team that dominated the Premiership winning it 5 times alone in the 90s plus the treble including the European Cup in 1999.

United (2011)

A story of both success and tragedy, 2011's United is based on the true story of the so-called 'Busby Babes' (the youngest side to ever win the league). This film's focus lies between 1956 and 1958, and although it covers some of the sides' most successful moments, it also focuses on the tragedy, which befell the team in 1958. We all know this as the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, which claimed the lives of seven of the team's players.

Fans of the team will particularly enjoy the film's exploration of the relationship between Murphy and Charlton, as well as the top-class acting from David Tennant.

The Class of 92 (2013)

There's no doubt about the class and clarity of this film's construction. It's a top-notch documentary gem that can unite football fans and non-fans alike.

It's a tale as much about friendship as it is about football, though fans of said sport will hugely enjoy the presence of Beckham, Butt, the two Nevilles, Scholes, Giggs and the tale of their youth. Simply put, this film transforms a story of football we already know into a strikingly personal one of friendship and success.

It's good to get some history out there for us Yanks over here .... it's like sports ed. on the blockchain!

I also love American sports films and documentaries too, you guys have produced so many, but the real life story ones on Netflix are my favourites. Fiction wise I really enjoyed Million Dollar Baby and White Men Can't Jump.

Raging Bull is probably one of my favourite real to life movies capturing the life of American middle weight boxer Jake Mollata.

Those are pretty good lists of the best class you got there. Amazing article too :)

That's some rich history at Man Utd. I followed the times of Ferguson and damn that 'class of 92' he created. I have to admit I envied it.
