Gregory Patterson, 28, came to the organizing committee early and explained to them that the tournament did not provide true equality of opportunity for participants. Patterson had only played chess as a child before and also practiced for two days before the competition to brush up on the rules. As a result, professional chess players found themselves in a privileged position compared to him, while he himself found himself in a discriminated position.

Patterson admitted that he had no chance in court, but threatened to incite fighters for equal rights at the championship - according to him, activists are not judges, they will not understand anything, and instead will leave no stone unturned from the event. After much wrangling, he was finally allowed to play according to the original method, and this was explained to the general public by the policy of “super-inclusiveness.”

As a result, Patterson won the tournament and gained the right to participate in the next league, where the best of the best compete and which opens the way to international chess competitions. However, it is unlikely that he will continue to compete - the chairman of the tournament, who had previously stated that “two can play this game” and did not have chess in mind, after the tournament accused him of harassment (indecent glances and hints), as well as harassment of her 24-year-old daughter, allegedly taking place 20 years ago. Several more of her deputies confirmed under oath that this “allegedly could have occurred,” after which Patterson was taken into custody. According to the laws of the state of California, he faces up to 20 years, and if the charges are confirmed, up to life.
