Corruption and problem with money flows in sport

in #sports7 years ago

There are probably a lot of different ways in which the money flow in sport are being influenced, but today I want to highlight three ways that is well known to most of us.

  • Cheating to lose - Match Fixing
  • Cheating to win which is primarily known as doping
  • Then we have cheating off the field, such as corrupt administrators, kickbacks to win marketing rights / hosting an international event, or just corrupt business dealings.

Doping is very difficult to counter, as the chemists, always tries to stay one step ahead, but there is still ways in which we can use blockchain technology to counter this threat. Remember blockchain are transparent, trustless and immutable. We can always track every doping test on the blockchain. We do not have to divulge the personal information of which athlete were tested, but we can always just keep the data on the chain.

The other two, match fixing and corrupt administrators, normally emerge from poor management and also from these transactions happening behind closed doors.

Corruption of the field

In today's sporting and media world, media rights is just massive. And where there is money and people involved, a lock of transparency and accountability is where we start finding problems.

America’s FIFA indictment alleges that some $150m in bribes were paid to secure media rights and votes for hosting the World Cup. A review by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) of the bidding process for the 2002 Winter Olympics found strong evidence that as many as 20 of the committee’s 110 members had received compensation for their votes. The Sochi Olympics last year cost an estimated $51 billion, funded mostly by the Russian government. They enriched dozens of well-connected construction and hospitality firms

Match Fixing

We all know that the sports betting industry is massive and a lot of these bets happens illegally. Legitimate gambling is growing at a humongous pace globally and when it comes to illegal betting, this is when we have a huge problem as some of these moneys flow into the players pockets.

In the real world sport cannot be separated from money.

But before wealth flows corruptly it must first be created. FIFA and the IOC get it from broadcast and sponsorship rights, which are large: after all, they have monopoly power over global sporting events. Unlike professional sport teams, though, they do not then disburse much of this cash to athletes (nor does much flow to the venues where they compete). Instead it goes to supposed good causes—and can be creamed off.

SportsPodium vows to make the money flows in sport transparent, democratic and accountable. Sure we cannot change the whole world at once, but we undertake to start at the bottom and work our way up step by step. We aim to ensure that rewards would accrue to the athletes and executives whose skills generated the revenue, rather than to middlemen and the match-fixers.

what is the effective way for removing corruption?

Transparency is a big help. All betting activity visible and you can see when match fixing is in play because the market will tell you and the fixers can be traced.

That is a very deep question and requires deep understanding. To me, it would require a deep understanding of human behavior.

One of the key aspects (but not the only) to remove corruption is to make the money flows transparent. Sponsor directly to Athlete with all transactions captured on a blockchain ... Donation to Athlete...

I used to follow sport with great enthusiasm until I realized that many games are more predictable then the elections in North Korea.

I think the best way of stopping the corruption in sports is to put a pressure on the clubs and the players, simply by turning the back to the teams and refuse following the games for a certain period. Then the players and the management of the teams will realize that they are existing because of the fans and not because of the corruption.

I think this is the most effective move one can make against corruption in sports. Vote with your media device:

Stricter penalties for getting caught. There would be a lot fewer baseball players who would use steroids or other performance enhancers if the rules were you would be banned for life. This is a very drastic and severe penalty but I believe it would greatly reduce the number of people who would consider using or cheating in some way. As the payout and reward would in most cases would not be worth the risk.

its almost like capitalism invades and destroys everything that does not secure the highest profit or something

what is the powerful route for expelling defilement?

Corruption has existed since the man was in the Earth, we could almost say it is human traditional. Maybe not but it has always been there.

This has been going on for centuries. You don't think it used to happen in the Coliseum with the gladiators?

Professional sports are pay to play. Unless everything goes amateur, you'll never be able to separate the two.

Sorry I might be misunderstanding your point but are you saying that Gladiators were professional sports people? And to add to that, are you saying that it is fine to be corrupt because sports turned professional?

Some gladiators were quasi professional in that the lifestyle their owners afforded them (good or bad) was directly related to their abilities and showmanship in the ring.

No, it is not okay to be corrupt. I meant that when you cross any activity with money, a certain amount of corruption will creep in.

yes its true

There need to be steps that ought to be put in place to curb these multipractices

That is so magnificent. I am very grateful for that! Love it.

In any place or event anywhere in the globe there is a corruption.

That would really be annoying for sure.
