Real Madrid beat Juventus 4-3 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the eighth year in a row, a milestone that no other team has managed.

The historic sequence of successes began in 2010/11, where Tottenham Hotspur became the first victim, and they were followed by APOEL Nicosia, Galatasaray, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich and now Juventus; three Germans teams, one English, one Italian, one Turkish, one Cypriot, and one Spanish.

This latest victory against Massimiliano Allegri's side means that Real Madrid have now made it through the quarter-final stage an astonishing 29 times out of 35, showing once again that they have a special affinity with this competition.

In fact, the 2003/04 season was the last time that Madrid got knocked out at this stage as they lost to a Monaco side containing Fernando Morientes, who scored in both the home and away legs.

It is true that they then failed to reach the quarter-finals for six straight years but this was just a blip for a team who that has won the competition in three of the past four years, and a team who can make it four in the past five with victory this season.
