@otogie Anthony Joshua reveals the advice Floyd Mayweather gave him

in #sports7 years ago

There is only one fight boxing fans are thinking about right now: Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor.

On paper, it should be an easy victory for the unbeaten Mayweather on August 26 but as we all know, anything can happen on the night.

Such is the interest in the clash, it looks set to break records left, right and centre.

Much of the build-up and hype has been criticised and labelled a 'circus act' but British heavyweight Anthony Joshua has come out in support of the spectacle.

Joshua, who was involved in the biggest fight of the year so far against Wladimir Klitschko in April, thinks the scrutiny Mayweather vs McGregor has received is 'rubbish'.

It’s now a mega-event – they have done a great job of promoting a huge event in the combat sports world,” said Joshua, per the Telegraph.

"It has become a global event. It’s rubbish [to criticise it]. Why weren’t they complaining all those years ago when James Toney stepped in the UFC Octagon with Randy Couture. The fans are deciding and that’s why this fight is happening.”

Joshua actually met up with Mayweather during the American's recent tour of the UK and received some handy advice from the 40-year-old.

Keen to fight and impress in America, the IBF, WBA (Super) and IBO heavyweight champion was warned against rushing into trying to take over the States.

Joshua added: “He was saying that the UK is where boxing is popular now, and not to rush to come to the United States – that the pound is always stronger than the dollar.

“I’m massively grateful for where I am, though. No one gives you anything when you come into boxing. It’s something you enjoy, but it’s all down to you, your hard work, what you put in, and that’s why you have to look at what Mayweather has done and his success.

"Look what they have done with this big fight next week, it has become one of the biggest fights ever.”

Nevertheless, Joshua admitted he was extremely disappointed Klitschko retired instead of taking up his offer of a rematch in Las Vegas.

“I think it would have been amazing if the fight could have happened in Vegas,” he continued.

“It would have been a big fight there.

It’s what we need, big-time heavyweight boxing back there. I think they [the American television network SHOWTIME] are calling for it, and I don’t see what the delay is.

After Klitschko decided against the rematch, Joshua looks set to take on mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev at the end of October._20170820_000037.jpg
