Arsenal Determined to Only Chase Elite Strikers
Arsenal are still chasing a striker before the close of the transfer window later this month but manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly determined that the Gunners will only bring in an elite level player that actually has the quality to improve his existing squad.
According to the Sun, Wenger primarily has eyes for Bayern Munich front-man Robert Lewandowski, a player that the reigning Bundesliga champions are not willing to pay what Karl-Heinz Rummenigge described as "crazy money" after the latest round of new contract negotiations.
As an alternative, the Arsenal boss is also a fan of Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann, but both he and Lewandowski would each command enormous fees in excess of £60m - a huge new potential transfer record for the Gunners.
That's if either of their respective clubs were willing to even let them go at all.
It is said that Alexandre Lacazette also remains a target at the Emirates. But, according to theDaily Telegraph, he too will also cost around £60m after Lyon significantly increased their asking price from a figure previously just under £43m.
Wenger has been heavily criticised in recent weeks for a lack of transfer activity following the early summer purchase of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Yet the Frenchman remains single minded in his efforts to only chase specific individuals of a certain quality, rather than bend to the risky scatter graph approach that many overzealous supporters would seemingly prefer - and complain about later.
"Arsene is willing to spend on a striker this summer, but only for the right man," a source told the Sun. "He has his targets and players he thinks will improve the squad, but this could go down to the wire."
Given the suggestion that only elite level superstar strikers will do, it remains to see where that leaves an overly optimistic headline from the Daily Star claiming that a £30m bid for Manchester City outcast Wilfried Bony is coming.
Typical Wenger..... Want world class super stars but not willing to spend big on them. Keep dreaming.
