The State of the Women's Bantamweight division

Amanda Nunes looks set to dominate the Bantamweight division for years to come, this was evident by her dominant TKO win over Raquel Pennington. The sad reality is that most MMA fans do not have any interest in her title reign due to the lack of promotion towards Amanda unlike Ronda Rousey and also because of the lack of connection people have towards her. The mystique of Ronda was that she was unbeatable and could not be stopped, she was backed massively by the promotion of the UFC due to the fact that she was responsible in convincing the UFC to allow women fighters to compete. Amanda practically receives not even a fraction of the same promotion. The lack of competition in the Bantamweight division make's the future of the division look really bleak also the lack of rivalry that Amanda has with other fighters. The one fight that would be considered as a rivalry for Nunes is Valentina Shevchenko but that fight has already happened twice, the second fight was extremely close but Amanda won by decision.

It must be uncomfortable for Nunes knowing that the UFC are hoping that she loses the belt by a new star that they will feel the public will gravitate to. The main issue as to why people don't enjoy women fighting in the UFC is because of the lack of entertaining fights and very few fighters in the Women's division are near the level of Nunes. I can’t see the women’s bantamweight division regaining the attention it once had anytime soon. Cyborg is also another example which demonstrates the lack of competition that she has, but due to the obvious unfair advantage that she has because of her previous steroid use it is unfair to expect other women fighters to even be able to get to her level. The UFC seems to think that fans enjoy watching a person completely dominate an opponent but competitive fights are the main reason we enjoy watching fighting, when we know the likely outcome we become less likely to want to watch. Amanda vs Cyborg is a fight that the UFC will try to make but i highly doubt that Nunes will take the risk as Cyborg has the potential to cause her serious harm not only to her health but also her reputation of being a champion.
