NBA History
On this date, Feb. 1st 1967 the American Basketball Association was Born.
The League had 11 Teams in it's 1st Season, and lasted until the 1975-76
Season at which point it was forced to disband because of financial
difficulties.
In the summer of 1976 four of these Teams joined the NBA.
The Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, New York(now New
Jersey) Nets and the San Antonio Spurs were the four Teams.
The League's 1st Commissionier was a Basketball Legend,
George Mikan. The 6ft. 10in.(208cm) Center was an NBL and
NBA Champion and also an NBA All-Star.
The original 11 Teams in 1967 were ;
-Anaheim Amigos
-Dallas Mavericks(Charter member and later became S.A. Spurs)
-Denver Larks(later became Denver Nuggets)
-Houston Mavericks
-Indiana Pacers(Charter member)
-Kansas City
-Kentucky Colonels(Charter member)
-New Jersey Americans(later New York Nets)
-New Orleans Buccaneers
-Oakland Americans
-Pittsburgh Pipers
Some prominent Players in the ABA that also went on to have
very big careers in the NBA ;
-Julius "Dr. J" Erving
-George "Ice Man" Gervin
-Artis Gilmore
-Moses Malone
