Sports: F1 Monaco GP Review - Redemption!

in #sports6 years ago

Hi fellow Steemians!

We've witnessed another great Monaco GP! Let's go through it.

Redbull redemption

I am a huge fan of Daniel Ricciardo because of his racing abilities and personality (and also because I'm based in Australia where he's from!). It was so great to see him win Monaco, his second win of the season. It was also good to see the Redbull team redeem for their horrific pitstop error made in 2016. It almost didn't happen when Ricciardo had his MGUK (power) issue. My heart sank when I heard his radio to the team but Ricciardo managed his race and pace wonderfully. What a way to finish Redbull's 250 F1 races. I truly think he's one of the greatest drivers on the grid and I hope he causes a headache for the top 2 drivers because I want to see more competition!

I also want to mention Max Verstappen. He started last because he couldn't qualify due to his crash / gear box problems but ended the race in 9th position on a track that's notoriously difficult to overtake. Well done and I hope to see more of his talent in the coming races.

Ferrari and Mercedes

The top two teams just couldn't keep up to Daniel's pace. I don't understand how this was possible but it happened. Redbull has, arguably, a slower car than the two but even with the power issues, Ferrari and Mercedes couldn't even keep up with Ricciardo. Very interesting to see and looking forward to any changes they make in the next races, if there will be any.

Unfortunate for the home boy LeClerc

LeClerc was doing so well in the last few races and he was doing well in Monaco as well, which is his home ground. It was so unfortunate to see him go out of the race due to a brake failure. It was his first ever race at home...

Also unfortunate was Brendan Hartley who also had to retire from LeClerc hitting the Toro Rosso car from behind. We've been hearing rumours about Hartley's uncertainty at Toro Rosso and the crash was not something he needed this weekend.

Oh Williams... The glory days are well past

We all know about the situation at Williams so I won't get too much into them, or their drivers. But it was just sad to see both their drivers in the last two places. It used to be a respectable team but what has happened to them...

What's happened to HAAS?

At the start of the calendar, there were big hype about HAAS. Both of their drivers' qualifying in Australia lived up to the hype. But unfortunate incidents happened to both in the Australian GP and subsequent races. Luck just doesn't seem to be on their side and it was no different in Monaco with both K-Mag and Grosjean (who had a 3 place penalty for the incident in Spain) finishing in the lower part of the field.

Great team work from Renault

Because of different strategies, Sainz had to let Hulkenberg through with Verstappen close behind both. Sainz pulled it through wonderfully, letting his team mate through but not Verstappen (who did eventually get past after a few more laps). Both had great teamwork, abilities and respect for each other and it was very nice to see.

Conclusion

This year's Monaco GP had relatively less action (crash), but nonetheless it was still very entertaining. Ricciardo's issues and the management of the issues kept viewers on the edge of their seat the whole race and the mid-table battle between Gasly, Hulkenberg, Verstappen and Sainz was also very exciting. It was also very unfortunate to see Alonso suffer from a gearbox issue (at least one thing always seems to be a problem for McLaren, whether it's engine or gearbox). Anyway, another Monaco GP successfully comleted. Now off to Canada in two weeks!

Looks like you had an amazing time watching it I’m glad. I don’t know any of these names so I have no favorites myself. Who are you looking to win in two weeks at the race in Canada?

Thanks @enjar! It was an entertaining race. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have dominated the last few years in Canada and I expect this to continue.

Daniel was just brilliant, amazing race for him. The other 2 big teams showed poor driving.

He managed the race very well even with a faulty power unit. Really showed his talent this weekend.

Exactly what I mean. :)
