Talking to God and Other Mystical Notions
There was a point in my life-- growing up in a very strict Christian household-- at which I took prayer for granted.
It seemed that my parents were immobilized by some strange fear that if they didn’t pray before they ate, got into the car, or settled in for the night to sleep something horrible would happen and there would be terrible consequences.
When the late George Carlin gave us the voice of God with the unforgettable line, “If you don’t do these ten things you’ll burn in hell … but I love you” I felt vindicated. That was the God of my parents.
Gather around the Light...
Freedom...?
I tolerated them and their bizarre prayer hobby until I left home.
Freed from the bonds of “Have you said your prayers?” on a regular basis and the accompanying guilt that went along with it, the prayer habit was shoved under the proverbial carpet in my mind until one day I was in a crisis and suddenly I needed to talk to God.
I wasn't seeking some remarkable light in the universe called “The Source” or a hierarchy of angelic entities sitting with some “creator” model of The Great Spirit, no — I needed the God that I’d grown up with and the God with whom my parents seemed to be quite intimate and yet seemed so terrified of. I didn’t want to be terrified, but I needed Supreme Help.
As I struggled with the uncomfortable sensation of beginning my prayer, I had a marvelous epiphany that has changed my life and the lives of thousands.
Conversations With God
I learned in an instant that regardless of who we are or what we’ve done, when we pray we are absolutely having a conversation with God. Plain and simple.
Celebrate the light
Humanizing deity is foolish at best, however for the sake of this analogy, imagine the joy in the heart of a parent when a long lost child connects saying, “Hey, I know I’ve been gone for eight years, but I need you.”
When I had my first real conversation with God I hadn’t felt loved, needed or cherished by anyone for quite awhile. I had emptiness around me and inside of me that no amount of meditation, stillness, or breath-work would change.
Finally surrendering to what my heart wanted me to say vs. what my head dictated was reasonable... led me to a few new understandings. Furthermore, I learned that when we begin a prayer with sincere gratitude, it changes everything.
There is a difference between a mantra and prayer
Mantras, or “mantrams” as they are called in India, are a form of meditation.
They are typically used to assist in meditation as well as to form the foundation of a group meditative process such as when monks chant. There are specific mantras used to open Chakra centers in your body as well as mantras for healing and inspiration.
Repeating a sound that is regarded as sacred, such as “Om,” will promote well being in the center of your soul and allow you to become open to a creative moment with God.
Popular does not always mean appropriate
Repeating a beloved prayer can be wonderfully healing.
The beauty of nature
There are dozens of reasons to quote The Lord’s Prayer even if you’re not a bible toting Christian, and The Serenity Prayer is available to all whether you’re in recovery or not. For Buddhists there are the Suttas (or Sutras) and even Native Americans have specific prose.
What should be kept in mind is that these prayers are simply guides. There is no right way or wrong way to pray. Oftentimes you will want to use your own words.
When you begin to speak with your heart, when you are able to define what you are feeling to a presence outside of your body and mind, it is in those moments you draw closer to God. It is in those moments your soul connects with a source greater than words and you form a bridge to that place where miracles happen.
Reserving time for prayer
When circumstances arrive in our lives that cause us stress or dis-stress, developing the habit of spending time in meditation can alleviate many of the negative symptoms associated with stress.
It’s also extraordinarily important to make time to have an ongoing conversation with God. Gandhi said, “Prayer is not an old woman’s idle amusement, properly understood and applied it is the most potent instrument of action.”
In the words of Gandhi
The Power of Prayer and Focused Intention
As Founder of the worldwide prayer group “White Light Express” I have experienced the power of positive focused intention and the energy behind prayer for over fifteen years.
I have witnessed miracles firsthand, watched as lives were remarkably changed and more. Most of all, I realized that the “attitude of gratitude” when I’m alone with God is reciprocated abundantly.
I urge everyone to remain faithful in your moments alone with God in prayer. Will you experience a miracle each time you ask for one? Statistically, probably not. However, in conclusion, I have faith enough for us both! Keep praying!

That was an awesome post and hit most of the points I went through when leaving the institution of religion. I've meditated with christian monks and nuns at vipassana retreats. They told me the meditation clears the way to hear God instead of hearing their ego.
Faith is certainly a very complex issue. As the late George Carlin once said: "There are seven billion people on Earth; there should be seven billion religions."
Sadly, most religions serve not to bring people closer to Source, but to separate them from it through layers of structure and rules generally created by humans for their own gains.
Thanks for your comment!
Very Good. Myself I am a Spinozist and as soon as I realized that Everything is God I finally understood what Jesus was teaching. God is Infinite so there is nothing other than God. Many great Jewish Mystics teach the same thing. I talk to Nature, the Universe to God all the time, and he listens to me. I myself am a part of and One with the Universe. The Peace of Jesus (God) / Yeshua ha Moshiach be with you always. ....
Big fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson-- thank you for sharing! Some people interpret the idea that "we are all God" as "New Age hoo-hoo" but it's actually basic physics.
Bright Blessings!
Wow that was very deep and beautiful, I pray for everything and I usually get an answer not always, sometimes its fast and sometimes it takes awhile. I've talked to God my whole life like if he was right there beside me (and he is) he is my lord and savior and my best friend, I loved your post you've got a new follower, merry Christmas!❤️❤️
Thank you for your kind words @cecirod1218! Sometimes our prayers seem to be answered "in time" and sometimes they arrive in ways we hadn't visualized.... an "adjacent" issue falls into place, removing the importance of the thing we were praying about. It's just important to be open! All the best you you and yours this Christmas season!
Inspirational words.
Never religious I turned my back on the idea of prayer many years ago believing myself to be hypocritical if I prayed.
About 15 months ago I had an unexpected spiritual epiphany and realised that prayer has as much, or little, to do with religion as a person wishes.
( I communicate with the spiritual realm).
I have always believed in an infinite power/creator and these days pray to what I imagine to be an incredible energy. I even say the Lords Prayer regularly as a form of thanks and protection from the dark!
Words with intention/prayer have power for sure and there is something that hears us all.
New here I am an artist/writer/lightworker and invite you to pop by mine if you have a mo :)

Beautiful share; thank you @ldacey-laforge!
It seems a lot of reject things spiritual and prayer simply because the "cultural box" we are given doesn't feel relevant to them; there is too much doctrine and rules.
There is a certain irony in the fact that a church will ask if you have "a close personal relationship with God" and then will go on to tell you that you need to (for example) tell your pastor, who tells the bishop, who tells the Pope, who talks to God.
My organization-- the White Light Express-- is completely non-denominational; whereas I personally come from a place of Christ Consciousness, we have Pagans, Buddhists, Baptists, Agnostics and even an Atheist or two. The power of positive focused intention is simply a mindfulness of where you place your attention and energy.
I will check out your page!
All the best to you and yours.
