"Per" means "through." We say "As per the government," meaning a report which came "through" the government.

"Son" means "sound," as in "sonic boom."

So, the "persona" is not the real character, but the mask "through which the voice / sound" of the character comes.

Taken in that light, we can see that the person you are is not your true character or even your true self. It's simply a "persona," playing a role on this stage we call life.
