Wherever You Are, Be There Totally
It is common knowledge that there is a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. This divide in an otherwise unified brain is created by our attention. We place our attention on certain aspects of what is currently in the field of our mental processes. This creates a divide between the focused mind and the unfocused mind.
This results in the mind's ability to remove itself from the present moment. Time is thus a mental construct, as there is only ever the present moment. The past is created from memories, and the future is created by projections. When we preoccupy our attention with what is not in our immediate lives, we weaken our connection with the moment. Our performance in tasks decreases, and we naturally feel unsatisfied.
This dissatisfaction is responsible for much of the suffering in the daily lives of many people. Their constant removal from the present moment makes it a habit to create problems, as it becomes second nature to seek out alternatives.
Accept what is. This is the key to happiness. If it is raining, accept the rain. This is not advice to linger in the rain, but rather to change our inner perspective of it. If we are attempt to deny the rain, resisting it internally, it brings us suffering. Those nagging thoughts about how we are getting wet, or how this will mess up our hair or clothes, do nothing for us. Drop them. Smile. Experience the rain as it is. Discover the peace that always existed underneath the suffering, that is always here in the now.
This extends to all aspects of life. If we hate the work we are doing, either stop doing it or accept the necessity of the work. Do not complain and drag your feet through the process, because that just makes you a victim. The more you fill your inner work with negativity, the more that negativity multiplies, and soon it seeps into other aspects of your life. Rising to action out of insight of what's required is far more effective than action arising out of negativity.
Keep your inner space clean. The psychic pollution that piles up from letting our attention run wild holds us back from our true potential. The false, unhappy self that loves feeling miserable cannot survive in a clean mind tuned to our immediate reality. Surrender to free yourself of the situation. Surrender is not a weakness: in fact, only a surrendered person has spiritual power. A person surrendering to the moment may find the situation changes without any effort on their part.
This is freedom. To be completely immersed in the here and now gives a person the fullest extent of peace available to the human experience. Nothing else can give this, and it is always available. Wherever you are, be there, now.
