what is the difference between being spiritual and religious

I think that, based on my own subjective point of view being spiritual is referring to one who understand that your is more to life than what they were told, taught. They understand that a man is a product of is society and that here is more to life than what means the eye. Now being religious is making references ones believe in a particular doctrine or movement proclaimed by society that have been established my society. I know this topic is a taboo one, but I had to give my view on the matter.
