Slaying spiritual misconceptions Part 2 – “All you’ll ever need is already within you” – Student and master relationship

in #spirituality7 years ago (edited)

Or as I like to say: “All you’ll ever need is already within you; as well as your ability to reach out for help and take in another perspective.”

On one end of the spectrum there are people who put their masters on a pedestal and blindly follow them without ever questioning their teachings, believing that they are somewhat “higher and better” than the rest of us. In a lot of cases they have simply misinterpreted the teaching, I can very well imagine Jesus saying: “I am the son of God and so are you” but the other part got lost somewhere in the translation.

On the other end there are “spiritual” people who will tell you that you don’t need a master, teacher, coach, mentor, shaman or a guide to tell you anything – you ought to know everything yourself, and since you ARE the Universe, all the answers already lie within you. While this can be true with a few “but’s”, it isn’t necessarily helpful. I’m here to expand on this advice.

If you believe in Oneness and that everything ultimately is YOU – isn’t a teacher also... you? While we are all the same being, we also have a split consciousness and therefore, infinite amount of perspectives (or in other words, lenses) to look through life. Your current perspective is very limited and another person will have things to offer that you simply have no easy access to – why not use it as it is essentially coming from the bigger part of you anyway? Do not give up your Inner Guidance, in fact – use it as a filter for what someone else is saying! If it rings true in your heart and you resonate with it (even if the truth feels unpleasant at times, it will still ring true through your resistance to it), then be open to the teaching and the newfound perspective! The reason why a lot of people do not support any student – teacher ideologies is the danger of getting too caught up seeing the master as too “Godlike” and thinking that they are better than the rest of us. It’s the danger of blindly following them when a healthy dose of skepticism would do no harm.

I’d say – and you’re welcome to not take my advice if it does not resonate – listen to others, ask for help, open yourself up to more perspectives but think for yourself, filter all information through your Heart center and see what rings true for you! Because you do know what is true for you but you may not necessarily be able to reach that information all by yourself! It can only feel right because you know it already and the Master/Teacher is only REMINDING you of that which you already know.
