Christian maturity: But you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ, and so all of you know the truth. 1 John 2:20
The first epistle of John is a letter most likely written by the most beloved disciple of Lord Jesus. In fact, the style of this epistle has great similarities with the Gospel of John, especially with regard to the teachings about the gift of eternal life and the commandment of love.
And the epistle begins by announcing Jesus as the second person of the Holy Trinity, and as the personification of eternal life so that believers may live in communion with God through the grace that faith grants. And then the apostle taught in his letter about the importance of the commandment of love necessary to enter into the spiritual life, because whoever does not love his neighbor cannot live the faith: "The one who loves God must also love his brother" 1 John 4:21.
In his spiritual teachings, the apostle also wrote about a topic of great relevance for the first christians, the doctrine of the Kingdom of God, the empire or dominion of the divine perfections, is not simply a philosophical doctrine, but the free and gratuitous action of the Holy Spirit in believers. This is why the apostle when referring to the receivers of his letter, probably believers located in the region of Asia Minor, referred to them as adult Christians; and this Christian maturity is the fullness of the spiritual gifts, that is why the apostle wrote with great devotion: "But you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ, and so all of you know the truth" 1 John 2:20.
This reality, the outpouring of the divine mysteries by the highest and most perfect, or in other words, the presence of the holy spirit as inner master, was something that was lived daily in the early Church, and the apostle John did not forget to remind the followers of Jesus this spiritual fact in order to combat the teaching of error, something very common in those times. The apostle John ultimately highlighted that truth and that light that can only come from God and that lead men to eternal life, the contemplative life, and in this life promised by Jesus lies, in essence, the destiny of every Christian.
