Bible teaching: We have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit.
Paul in his letter to the Romans explains that the works that come from the law do not bear fruit of life, that is, they do not justify us. The kingdom of God is not the dominon or empire of the law of Moses, but the government of mercy, the reign of godliness, the dominion of God's wisdom. The spiritual gifts are perfections: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful", Luke 6:36; "Be holy because I am holy", 1 Peter 1:16
The justification in the bible is related to living the spiritual gifts, with living according to the spirit, the law of Moses is written for those who live according to the flesh. The law points us to sin but does not free us from error.
The law is not enough to achieve beatitude, and this is understood when Nicodemus, a doctor of the law, talks to Jesus and does not understand what it means to be born of water and of the spirit. Nicodemus cannot see the Kingdom of God because he is subject to the law: "´How can someone be born when they are old?´ Nicodemus asked. ´Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!´", John 3:4
Paul reflects on the opposition between law and mercy and gives us this teaching: "We have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit.", Romans 7:6.
For Paul we are slaves of the law, because the law is a heavy burden, sometimes even impossible to fulfill. Not even Jesus can comply with all the requirements of the Law, that is why he comes into conflict with the religious authorities of his time, Jesus heals the sick on Sabbath, the holy day. The law does not consider mercy.
Serve in the new way of the Spirit means a new mentality, means to see the world with the eyes of God: "To the pure, all things are pure", Titus 1:15. And this serving in the Spirit introduces us to a new life, the life in common: "All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people." Acts 2:44-47.
