Spider Man: Far FAR Away From Home

in #spiderman6 years ago

Well that was quick.

Almost two weeks after releasing the soon-to-be highest grossing movie of all time....Avengers Endgame....Marvel Studios has decided to release an extremely spoiler-ridden trailer for the next movie in the now-legendary Marvel Cinematic Universe...Spider-Man: Far From Home. This was an EXTREMELY Interesting trailer chalk-full of potential talking points, so let's get to it shall we?

Warning...major spoilers for Avengers Endgame ahead

The Ripple Effect

This trailer does not play around and gets straight to the point right off the bat. Tony Stark is dead. This is big for this version of Spider-Man (and the MCU as a whole). We all know how much Peter looked up to Tony as a father-figure, so Seeing how Tony's death will affect Peter going forward will be extremely interesting and will be really big for Peter's development. The trailer starts off with a monologue by the human spider himself...

"everywhere I go...I see his face" he says. This accompanies a shot of peter in his iron spider suit (mask-less) looking at a hand-painted mural of Iron Man on the side of a building in celebration of his memory and sacrifice. We see a similar shot later on in the trailer where we see Peter staring at what appears to be a shrine devoted to Tony. The world loved Iron Man before, but now he appears to have been elevated to mythical status and deservedly so. After all, he did sacrifice everything he knew and loved to give this reality a second chance at redemption, and the universe seems to be cognizant of this. No one outside of Pepper is feeling it more than Peter. He feels personally responsible for carrying the burden of Tony's legacy on his shoulders, and he even mentions near the end of the trailer that "the world needs a new Iron Man" which all but confirms this notion. Also we hear Happy say "I don't think Tony would have done what he did if he didn't know you were gonna be here after he was gone" alluding to the fact that Tony trusts Peter...especially after mentoring him. One more little hint towards Spidey becoming the next best thing was at the very beginning when we hear the NYPD asking Spider-Man if he would become the next Iron Man...to which Peter replied that he didn't have time to do so. They are not being subtle with this plot point. Some people might get triggered by this, as it is way too soon to be thinking about Tony's replacement, but it doesn't bother me at all. While I don't think the MCU will try to turn Spider-Man into the "new Iron Man", I do think that Peter will eventually take Tony's place as a leader and ambassador to Earth. This has been set up since the very inception of the MCU Peter Parker, and I think it's very fitting...as long as they develop the character the right way and he earns it just as Tony had to. There might not be an Iron Man anymore...but as Pepper said in Endgame..."We will be okay".

Oh and in case you missed it...the shot of Peter taking off his sunglasses makes him look eerily similar to Tony... and upon closer inspection they do appear to be the same sunglasses that Tony wore in Endgame. Really cool.

Does Whatever a Spider Can

Something that was really lacking in Spider-Man: Homecoming was Spidey's actual skill set and powers. While I did like Homecoming, I did have a few issues with it...biggest of all being the fact that his suit was doing everything for him instead of him honing and mastering his spidey-sense. I REALLY hope they develop his actual powers in this one and show them off. While The Amazing Spider-Man films weren't the most well-written or directed, the one thing they did REALLY well was show off his unique powers. Those films might not have made Peter Parker look so good...but dang did they make Spider-Man look good. Hopefully this film will take a few notes on the action sequences of those films (as well as Into the Spider-Verse) and bring them to fruition in a movie that is also well-written and directed with passion instead of monetary greed. I trust the MCU to treat the character right...especially after what they just accomplished with Avengers Endgame.

Alas, based on the action scenes in this trailer, I don't think I have too much to worry about. I already saw more action in this trailer alone than the entire first film. Peter really seems to finally have a good grasp on his powers and how to use them effectively. The coolest shot in the whole trailer (in my opinion) was the final one of him avoiding a fireball by climbing/running up the side of a building, then doing a back flip off of it. To me, you HAVE to include shots like this throughout the film. It's what makes Spidey so unique! I am also loving the variety of suits in this. I am a sucker for a cool suit design, and this film seems to have nailed every suit shown so far (I have counted three). Again, as long as the suits let him do most of the heavy lifting, I am okay with them....and give us a slow-motion Spidey-Sense scene! We can never get enough of those!

We're Not in Kansas Anymore

One of my first impressions after viewing this trailer was that the title Far From Home is an amazingly fitting title for this film. Not only is Peter actually pretty far from his home in the film, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole is starting to drift further away from it's roots. I say this because the Marvel Multiverse was confirmed in this trailer, and I can't say I'm surprised. After seeing Doctor Strange, I thought it was only a matter of time before they explored the multiverse. The only thing that surprises me about the concept is the fact that they are choosing to introduce it in a Spider-Man film instead of a better suited character such as Doctor Strange himself, or even the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, after mulling it over for a few hours, I can come up with a few good reasons as to why Marvel is doing this:

  • Marvel doesn't actually outright own the rights to Peter Parker...they are essentially borrowing him for a few movies, and then either a new deal will need to be made with Sony, or else they will have to give the rights back to Sony. This could provide a way for Peter to jump back into the Sony Spider-Verse if things come to that. Something tells me Marvel has big plans for Peter though, and I have confidence that they will end up working something out.

  • If Spidey does in fact stay in the MCU, this could provide a way for the Sony Spider-Verse characters to enter the MCU...even if it might be temporary. More specifically, I am thinking about Venom, and how Sony clearly cut that movie down from being rated R to being rated PG-13 to allow the possibility of venom possibly existing alongside the MCU Peter Parker. Either way, Sony has the leverage in this particular case, so something tells me they will either get their live-action characters into the MCU, or they will be taking Spidey back. Marvel Studios might have to bite the bullet on this one.

  • Obviously this opens the door for unlimited possibilities in regards to the Spider-Verse and possible stories they could tell down the line with the MCU Peter Parker. After the success that was Into the Spider-Verse Sony...as well as Marvel Studios could be planning a live-action Spider-Verse, and although I am against this idea (I think the animated version works just fine...if not much better than a live action version) I understand it. Lots of money to be made off of this.

In addition to the Spider-Verse angle, opening the MCU up to the Multiverse would also be a smart way to bring in the characters that Marvel just bought back from Fox...i.e. the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and all of the villains/characters that come with them. I also like the idea of the Snap having such a big impact on the MCU. It makes Infinity War and Endgame that much more important...and I didn't think that was even possible. The idea of the Infinity Stones having the power to manifest mutant powers within seemingly normal humans has already been teased in The Winter Soldier after-credits scene, as well as Age of Ultron. I am talking about Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver obviously...as they are originally X-Men characters. Not only could the snap have tore a hole in the multiverse (as stated in this trailer) but the "power surge" mentioned by Rocket in Endgame could have sent ripples across space and time to manifest mutant powers across the multiverse. There has been a total of four "Snaps" thus far in the MCU (including the one at the end of Infinity War) which means ALOT of energy has been sent flying through space and time all at once. I HAVE to believe that this, combined with the multiverse, will be how Marvel brings the Fox characters into their film universe. It's the most practical way. We can't blame Marvel for not having set up the Fox characters in their universe already...especially if they weren't sure whether they would be able to acquire them or not. I will accept it if they decide to go that route. Again, I trust Marvel. They haven't let us down yet.

One more thing to mention, is that Mysterio claims to have originated on another earth (a.k.a the multiverse). This is important (and smart), because it will allow him to easily fool this earth into thinking he is a hero (which seems to be how they view him). I am thinking he failed on his earth, and so he has come to this one to try again. I am sticking to my theory that Mysterio is actually a fraud and is creating extremely complex illusions to fool the earth into thinking he is a hero, when he really has much more sinister plans in mind. Because he is getting this fresh start on this Earth, it will allow for a complex relationship between Mysterio and Spider-Man to be formed (which seems to be what they are doing). This gives me hope for the film, because allowing a hero and villain to develop a complex and deep meaningful relationship (good or bad) is a sign of good writing and character development, and this also hopefully means that Mysterio will be around for the long haul (most likely appearing in the Sinister Six film that Sony is hell-bent on making). I really like the direction this film is going in terms of writing and character development. I really think (and hope) that this will be the film where we really see Peter grow into his own. Fingers Crossed.

It's also important to note that while the trailer made it look like Spider-Man would be inheriting the responsibilities of Iron Man, that could be the ol' classic "trailer trickery" that Marvel likes to pull all the time. Peter could very well be talking about Mysterio inheriting the role of Iron Man...and while this obviously would not come to fruition (Mysterio being a villain and all) it has already been hinted at in the previous trailer when Flash said Mysterio looked like "Thor and Iron Man all rolled into one". Peter could be trying to push these responsibilities onto Mysterio the whole time, and when Mysterio is revealed to be the fraud that he is...Peter might finally have to accept the responsibility and "Step Up" as Nick Fury says.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

It seems that this trailer has been given the green light to push the MCU into the next phase of it's existence. Like Kevin Feige said...the future of the MCU will look much different than the first 3 phases of the MCU, and I have to think that this film will attempt to introduce us to this new crazy universe...no multiverse that Mr. Feige and Sony are setting up for this film franchise. After the unique success of the "Infinity Saga", the MCU will be forced to adapt and change its approach...or risk the much-discussed "Superhero Film Fatigue" that the clueless critics keep talking about. If they manage to pull off the introduction of the multiverse in this film...as well as keeping everything neat and contained in regards to story and character development...I think this movie could prove to be one of the most important in all of the MCU.

Like I've said multiple times...I really have faith that Marvel Knows what they are doing. Only time will tell. However, I will warn the creative team behind this film as well as Marvel Studios/Sony....with great power comes great responsibility. Please don't mess this up. We deserve a truly great Spider-Man franchise.

...and something tells me we are getting exactly that. Until then....
