El Bitcoin es una moneda  como el euro o el dólar,  sirve para intercambiar bienes. Sin embargo, a diferencia de estas monedas, es una divisa electrónica, que existe exclusivamente en Internet,  gana prestigio en el ciberespacio gracias a su eficiencia, seguridad y facilidad de intercambio.( The Bitcoin is a currency like the euro or the dollar, used to exchange goods. Su principal diferencia frente al resto de monedas es porque se  trata de una moneda descentralizada, cuyo valor no depende de la tasa de interés que fija un Banco Central de Reserva ni  tampoco de sus reservas en bancos comerciales. El Bitcoin se somete a las leyes de la oferta y la demanda, elevando o disminuyendo su valor sobre la base de Bitcoins disponibles o no en el mercado.
