Fue fundado En Febrero del año 2.006 en San Bruno, California - USA por 3 ex empleados de PayPal llamados Chad Hurley, Steve Chen y Jawed Karim.
Posteriormente en octubre del año 2.006 fue vendido a Google Inc por la cuantiosa suma de 1.650 millones de dólares.
El primer video de YouTube fue subido el 23 de abril del año 2.005, Se llama “Me at the Zoo”. El autor fue Jawed Karim, uno de los fundadores de la plataforma.
