Pastor de Nubes - Jean Arp

Ya no por azar, sino por propia elección, decidimos bajar en la estación Plaza Venezuela y recorrer la más antigua y amada universidad de Venezuela conocida simplemente como la "central", fundada por el Rey de España Felipe V en el año 1721. Declarada por la UNESCO como patrimonio de la humanidad en el año 2000, se convirtió en el primer campus universitario de Latinoamérica con ese honor (solo dos a la fecha ostentan ese estatus). Ubicada en la Urbanización Valle Abajo y colindante con la autopista "Francisco Fajardo". En 1942 y bajo el mandato del Presidente Isaías Medina Angarita comienzan los estudios preliminares para la construcción, al frente de tan magna obra estuvo el arquitecto Carlos Raúl Villanueva responsable del diseño, quien junto con 28 artistas connotados, nacionales y extranjeros, se encargaron de fusionar y hacer de ella una gran obra de arte de más de 200 hectáreas de extensión. Construida en los terrenos de la antigua hacienda Ibarra propiedad del libertador Simón Bolívar (la casa principal de la hacienda permanece intacta a la fecha). Fue inaugurada parcialmente por el presidente Marcos Pérez Jiménez en 1954 consta con 70 edificios y obras de arte por doquier, diseñadas por artistas de la talla de Mateo Manaure, murales de Víctor Vasarely, Wilfredo Lam, Fernand Léger, y esculturas de Jean Arp y Henri Laurens, un ejemplo de ellos son las nubes flotantes de Alexander Calder que decoran los techos y paredes del aula magna (teatro/auditorio) y gracias a las cuales no hay necesidad del uso de micrófonos ni altavoces para magnificar el sonido. En la UCV se puede practicar casi cualquier disciplina deportiva, incluso uno de sus estadios es sede del equipo de béisbol profesional Leones del Caracas. El techo del gimnasio cubierto visto desde la autopista tiene forma de gorra militar y fue apodado como la cachucha de Pérez Jiménez. Por las aulas de la antigua sede, (otrora convento de San Francisco y actual Palacio de las Academias), pasaron venezolanos de la talla de Don Andrés Bello, el Dr. José María Vargas, el General Francisco de Miranda, Don Juan Germán Roscio, el Dr. y hoy Beato de la iglesia católica José Gregorio Hernández, entre otros.

Luego de recorrer la universidad, llegamos a la plaza Venezuela, donde decimos pasear por ella y sus alrededores, pero esa, esa es otra historia…
