Muchos de nosotros nos sentábamos frente al televisor, solo para observar al fuerte marinero, presionar el envase de cual salía disparado el contenido verde que sorprendentemente se introducía completamente en la boca del personaje, dándole una fuerza sobre humana que le permitía arrastrar por el suelo al gigante “BRUTUS”. Y decíamos: “¡Si!... debemos comer espinacas para ser como POPEYE”.

Sin embargo, fuimos engañados por este personaje animado creado en 1929, y la razón se debe en parte a que en ese tiempo, en las tablas del contenido en hierro de los diferentes alimentos, LAS ESPINACAS se situaban muy por encima pero… debido a un error numérico.

En el año de 1870 El químico alemán Erich von Wolf fue el primero que midió el contenido de hierro de las ESPINACAS, pero se equivocó al momento de poner la coma, de manera que en vez de otorgarle a las ESPINACAS unos modestos 0,35 miligramos de hierro por cada 100 gramos de espinaca, terminó colocándole unos sorprendentes 3,5 miligramos de hierro por cada 100 gramos de ESPINACA (es decir diez veces más hierro del que realmente poseía).

Así pues de un momento a otro la ESPINACA obtuvo ficticios poderes ferrosos que inspirarían a Elsie Segar a crear este famoso personaje que… nos engañó a todos.
