Monumento Natural Cerro Autana, Estado Amazonas.

El cerro Autana, Euwabey o Kuawai "El árbol de la vida" en dialecto Piaroa, es un tepuy que se encuentra situado en el estado Amazonas.

Existe una leyenda Piaroa que cuenta que el cerro Autana representa el árbol de la vida, que dio origen a todas las frutas que le dan sustento a los hombres y a los animales. Es por lo tanto una montaña sagrada en la cual ningún indio Piaroa acepta adentrarse.

Fue declarado monumento natural en 1978. Es uno de los tepuyes del sur de Venezuela, con aproximadamente 1.300 metros de altura. Dentro de la montaña, hay una cueva formada enteramente de cuarzo, que mide 400 metros de longitud y 45 metros de altura.

Para llegar se debe navegar primero el río Orinoco, desde el puerto de Samariapo, luego el Sipapo y finalmente el río Autana.

Hay grutas interconectadas y un salón muy grande con un techo en forma de cúpula que tiene distintos colores por la distinta composición de los minerales que la forman. Este salón abovedado presenta dos aberturas desiguales que perforan el cerro de lado a lado y se asoman como una especie de balcones a las paredes verticales de la montaña, que tiene más de 1,5 km de altura sobre el nivel de la selva. A pesar de que una de esas aberturas, aunque alargada, es tan pequeña que no se distingue desde abajo, sirvió para que el Cap. (AC) Jaime "Jimmy" Marull con un ultraligero la atravesara de parte a parte en una maniobra tan arriesgada que parece no haberse repetido en otras ocasiones.

La leyenda

La leyenda indígena Piaroa cuenta que al principio el dios Wahari dispuso que nadie debía trabajar y que todos los frutos, nueces y raíces se encontrarían en el Wahari-kuawai o “Árbol de los Frutos del Mundo”. Así vivieron los hombres antiguos hasta que una ardilla golosa, el tucán de pico largo y el pájaro carpintero, que fueron antepasados de los hombres actuales, se empeñaron en tumbar el árbol Wahari-kuawai para no tener que recoger más su comida.

Estuvieron cortándolo durante mucho tiempo y cuando al fin lograron tumbarlo, se pudrieron todos los frutos y sus ramas gigantescas cayeron hacia el río Cuao, donde están ahora las tierras más fértiles y los restos del tronco se convirtieron en montañas que bloquearon los ríos y provocaron inundaciones y represas por todas partes.

Como en una de estas represas quedó atrapado un pez payara de grandes colmillos que es el más saltador de todos, al tratar de escapar de su encierro le pegó varias veces con la cabeza al tocón del árbol Wahari-kuawai, que ahora se llama Kuaymayojo (cerro Autana), por lo que en ese lugar de la montaña aún se pueden ver los huecos que hizo la Payara antes de atravesar el cerro y formar la cueva que hay allí.

Autana Hill Natural Monument, Amazonas State.

The Autana Hill, Euwabey or Kuawai "The tree of life" in dialect Piaroa, is a tepuy that is located in the state of Amazonas.

There is a Piaroa legend that tells that the Autana hill represents the tree of life, which gave rise to all the fruits that give sustenance to men and animals. It is therefore a sacred mountain in which no Piaroa Indian accepts to enter.

It was declared a natural monument in 1978. It's one of the tepuis of southern Venezuela, with approximately 1,300 meters of height. Inside the mountain, there is a cave entirely made of quartz, which measures 400 meters in length and 45 meters in height.

To get there you must first navigate the Orinoco River, from the port of Samariapo, then the Sipapo and finally the Autana River.

There are interconnected caves and a very large room with a dome-shaped roof that has different colors due to the different composition of the minerals that form it. This vaulted hall has two uneven openings that pierce the hill from side to side and look like a kind of balconies to the vertical walls of the mountain, which is more than 1.5 km high above the level of the forest. Although one of these openings, although elongated, is so small that it can not be seen from below, it served for Cap. (AC) Jaime "Jimmy" Marull with an ultralight will cross it from side to side in a maneuver so risky that it seems not to have repeated on other occasions.

The legend

The indigenous Piaroa legend says that at first the god Wahari ruled that no one should work and that all the fruits, nuts and roots would be found in the Wahari-kuawai or "Tree of the Fruits of the World". Thus the ancient men lived until a greedy squirrel, the long-beaked toucan and the woodpecker, who were the ancestors of modern men, insisted on knocking down the Wahari-kuawai tree so as not to have to pick up more of their food.

They were cutting it for a long time and when they finally managed to knock it down, all the fruits rotted and its giant branches fell towards the Cuao river, where the most fertile lands are now and the remains of the trunk became mountains that blocked the rivers and caused flooding and dams everywhere.

As one of these dams was caught a payara fish with large fangs that is the most jumper of all, trying to escape from his confinement hit him several times with his head to the stump of the Wahari-kuawai tree, which is now called Kuaymayojo ( Autana hill), so that in that place of the mountain you can still see the holes that La Payara made before crossing the hill and forming the cave that is there.
