Mara

Una Mara es un espíritu duende maligno del Folclore alemán, éstas se suben sobre las personas aplastando su pecho mientras duermen haciéndose más y más pesadas, incluso pueden afectar a las mascotas. Generalmente se describe como una pequeña criatura de color negra que aparece cuando las personas y sus mascotas duermen. Se dice que entra en las habitaciones a través de las cerraduras o grietas de las puertas y ventanas, entrando de ésta manera. El ataque de estas pequeñas criaturas producen ansiedad y falta del aliento, según algunos casos hasta llegan a tener relaciones sexuales con los hombres.

El folclorista alemán Franz Félix Adalbert kuhn, registró un encanto u oración para mantener alejadas a las maras:

                        Aquí estoy antes de dormir;
                      sin pesadillas que me acosen 
                      hasta que hayan nadado a través de
                      todas las aguas que fluyen en la tierra,
                       y con todas las estrellas 
                       que surgen en los cielos.
                      [Que me ayude Dios padre, Hijo y
                        Espíritu santo, Amen!] 

Estas al igual que los Alps pueden cambiar de forma, traen consigo enfermedades e incluso vibras negativas para el hogar y los que les habitan, además de que también le roban la leche materna a las mujeres.

En el folclore polaco conocen a esta pequeña criatura como mora, y se creían que eran las almas de gente viva que abandonaban su cuerpo mientras dormían. Para los polacos la mora entra en las habitaciones a través del ojo de las cerraduras, se sentaban en el pecho de las personas he intentaban estrangularlos. Para ahuyentar a las moras, los niños debían mirar por sus ventanas o girar sus almohadas y y hacer una señal de cruz en ellas. Al principio del siglo XIX se menciona que para repeler malos espíritus se dejaba una escoba al revés detrás de la puerta o rezando una oración para antes de ir dormir.
