La Redondela Town - Strawberries and Sheep
Happy Sunday everyone! It's a new day! Hope you are all having a great time with your loved ones. Today, I will share about our adventures yesterday. We went biking to a near town Redondela, which is belongs to Isla Cristina municipality with 1,238 inhabitants according to 2013 census Source. It's 3 km from our town. Our plan was to go and hang out in the park and enjoy the view of the ocean. But then we all decided to take another route.
I thought it would be very far away, we asked around and they told us it was only 3 km if we take the short cut. We followed the road, there was almost nobody there, some horses relaxing and enjoying the weather. Then we saw a huge strawberry field. It was plenty of them in every corner. They were covered with plastic. Strawberries are one of the major export of Spain. They say that strawberries in Andalucia are some of the best. I have a friend who works in a farm and sometimes she would give us a box. Not only that it's sweet, they are huge!!! The strawberry season is just beginning they are starting to appear in the supermarkets.
Strawberries in the Polytunnel
I was wondering, why they use these platic tunnels? It's to protect the crop from rain and to keep the frost off. Rain can damage the skin of the strawberries and rot the crop. The polytunnel also encourages the crop to grow faster. Source. As you can see some of the plastic tunnels are higher and some are lower. They can also adjust it to regulate the temperature, humidity, ventilation etc. Source
@sunnylife had a chance to make some photos. The strawberries that I saw in the plantation were still not ready for the market. They are starting to get ripe. We haven't buy any strawberries yet this year. Have you ever grown non commercial strawberries?

After seeing the strawberry farm, we went further with our bicyles. Our goal was to get to the next town. There was nobody on the road. After 30 minutes we reached Redondela. We explored the town for a while. They have almost everything there, it's a cute town. One of my son's classmates live in this area they own a bar. We stopped by at El Jamon supermarket and sat on the bench near to the city hall. Houses are painted in white and close to each other. In the center they have the basic needs, supermarket, cafe, schools and a mall. My son needed some rest so we had some drinks at one of the cafe's.

Portugal is close to Redondela, maybe less than hour with the car.
On our way back, we took the same route and we saw a lot of sheep, this was the exciting part for me lols. There were plenty of them maybe 500 plus 2 dogs and a shephered guiding the sheep. It was fun watching them eating and the bells on their neck were ringing all the time. Have you ever wondered sometimes why they wear bells? Kling!! kling!! You can determine how far they can go. Are they are in distress? I kinda like the sounds tho, it's very unique. But not all of them have these metal bells. Only the dominant sheep and rams have them. In the past they used different kind of bells (metal, iron, brass, bronze or woods)with different kind of sounds depending on the kind of animals, age and sex. source

They looked so happy!!
Let's try selfie with them:) getting used to it lols

It was already past 14:30 when we reach our town, we did some groceries and went home. It was a nice day out.
That's all for now. Keep shining everyone!
