Space Decentral, a New Kind of Space Agency

New world, new space agency. The space agency Space Decentral is “building a decentralized space program, connecting thousands of engineers, scientists, and future astronauts, to devise and fund next-generation space initiatives.” In their White Paper, they present Space Decentral as “a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) whose operational protocol utilizes the blockchain [with Aragon on Ethereum] to reinvigorate the push for space exploration with the public in control. Space Decentral will design space missions collaboratively, share research for peer review, crowdsource citizen science efforts, and crowdfund projects that lack national budgets.” Yalda Mousavinia, co-founder of Space Decentral, explained recently that “SpaceDecentral it’s decentralized because a single corporation or nation will not be responsible for its management. It’s autonomous because there will be member control over how work is directed, how decisions are made, and which projects to fund. And it’s a space agency because the purpose is to strategically develop a space plan, so we can act with meaningful impact (…) It’s about really creating a roadmap that will be citizen-led.” The Space Decentral idea of a space agency as a decentralized autonomous organization was inspired by their co-founder Giulio Prisco.
