it's the enzyme released by the pancreas. It's an alkaline chemical and that's why it may help in some heartburn. However, sometimes heartburn is caused by low stomach acid (Hypochlorhydria) ... and in this situation, NaHCO3 (Baking Soda) would be a good screening tool
