Charter Fools

in #sociology6 years ago

I stand on the not so popular opinion that for the most part college and universities are a scam. Of course, when I say this, when I talk all hyperbolic, I do so not because I don't believe in knowledge per say, in improving one self, but more so because the education system in America is just a for-profit machine designed to enslave would be professionals into debt. Debt, mind you, that they can't default on in any way shape or form.

That being said, what has me a bit riled up at this point in time is the direction we seem to be headed to as a country with education. I mean, I want to make sure I don't sound irrational or too emotional, but it seems to me that the idea that keeping the populous stupid, so it can be easy to dominate, fits perfectly in today's world, and this somewhat conspiratorial thought has footing in my head these days.

Charter Schools

We really and I do mean really need to get rid of them. They are nothing but corporate welfare and anybody who cares about the future of America should be able to see how much damage these schools are causing to the country. In other words, the idea that a private schools being funded by the government sounds not only contradictory, but also a recipe for disaster.

This without even going into the numbers that already prove how much these don't work at all. But don't believe me, look this up for yourself, and get ready to share my frustration when you find out how many "schools" get funded, but never open, or fake their attendances to get the money, and how the governmental positions to keep this in check don't do their job at all.

Let's not get anecdotal here, I'm not too interested in how X School that you know of is awesome, because that is too microscopic to actually outline the scope of this problem.

More and more I'm leaning towards the idea that we need to reform our welfare system, and it probably should start with the biggest leeches. The corporation that get to make millions, not pay a dime in taxes and have their employees on governmental programs, and the "schools" that should never have existed in the first place.

Again, I'm ranting...

Sort:

There is lots of evidence that charter schools work as well. Ive read stories where they have waiting lists miles long for people to get in. Competition and greed is a good thing. Just look at all the foreigners that come to colleges here in the us. Must be doing something right.

Also, public schools are going to hell faster than charter. My neice and nephew get e learning days where they get the day off to teach themselves the lessons online.

If thats not a crock I dont know what is.

When compared to the School Performance Profile, the average score for “traditional public schools was 77.1, but for charter schools, it was 66.4, and cyber-charter schools came in at a low 46.8” (Are Charter Schools the Answer?). The purpose of these schools is to simply be the top academic schools. From this point of view, charter schools are not only lower than the standard score of 70, but they are doing worse than public schools.

Found some ugly numbers out there, and a well written article about this here.

There's some citations of course...

Meno my man rant on. Student debt is going to add to the crippling debt default that could pull the country into another worse recession than 2008. Engineered debt slavery.

Recently watched an episode of patriot act about the subject . Its shocking the so called superpower is actually a ship of debt , where to think freely you to college only to be trapped

Private schools and universities are money making institutions and do not care about the person, the course or whether they succeed or fail as long they pay. To me, the sign of an educated person is one who can apply the practicalities of the job to the learned theory and academics. Someone who can do good in the community.

Pay-to-play?????

Its always about the finances brother, if you got it, getting an education is easy

They don't even hide it anymore, you need to pay upfront and you progress through University

Greetings, @meno. I went to grad school in the States and I can't complain about the education I received, but I can understand your point and agree with the current issues at hand.
There are many issues involving money-making more than professionals-making
Here's one issues that actually goes back to Elementary and HS. Standardized testing gets even trickier and fishier when it comes to college admission (TOEFL, GRE, etc.)
At least John Oliver makes us laugh about it. Sort of

Excellent review @meno and apparently someone is very beneficial to such "schools" exist and be funded!

it seems to me that the idea that keeping the populous stupid, so it can be easy to dominate, fits perfectly in today's world, and this somewhat conspiratorial thought has footing in my head these days.

This "being enslaved" I just don't buy.

I consider this to be a kind of anticipatory obedience on the part of the citizens themselves, because they don't seem to demand much from their teachers or professors. And these not from them.

After all, the Minister of Culture is not in the room. He is busy with the fact that there must be a global standard of education, because politics is well advised to think globally and not nationally. If it wants to do this, it needs a standard that we may not like in an educational institution. You cannot graduate in Germany and then simply move to Canada, or vice versa, if there were no global educational average.

We are not quite there yet, because the specialisations in the sciences and the technical requirements are still putting us through our paces. Nobody must hold me stupid as I can always get to the sources of information if I want that. This is something people already know, yet not consciously thinking about it.

Meanwhile, we are afraid of being overtaken by artificial intelligence just as we are by the climate, where all learning seems to make no sense. Which is nonsense, of course, but if you'd rather deal with conspiracy than with how you're currently shaping a life, which makes a difference.

To meet such a global standard, the old hymns of praise for the excellent university education are finished and they will never come again. At least not for the masses. They never were anyway.

But today life in modern societies is much easier and at the same time different, sometimes even more difficult. If the standard of education is mediocre, it is because we cannot exchange top graduates with average graduates across continents. Everyone wants to go where the biggest cake, the biggest adventure, the best reputation awaits them. These places were, and will always be, only very few. Ultimately, there is no alternative but to see ourselves as citizens of the world in a standardized form, because the future is global if we want it. Otherwise, all air traffic, all long-haul holidays, will have to be stopped. This dismantling will not succeed, too much depends on transport. The only way out is global. Hopefully also in such a way that mass animal breeding will soon no longer be necessary and aircraft will do something other than damage the atmosphere. Better it would be to enhance the atmosphere with something useful instead of harmful.

But now. At least today every educated citizen who wants to play in the world has a computer and Internet access. Everything that is not education in the traditional sense by university or school wants to be self-raised and researched. We rely on the Internet, this may be wrong or right, it is in any case the case that autodidactics has always been the key to a more fulfilled life and even as a mass student at a mass university you can still friendly seek contact to the professor and see if there is anything that he can teach you.

But students are just as lame or committed as their professors are and vice versa. Just like citizens mirror their politicians and vice versa.

If you ask me we are too much obsessed with ourselves (prolonging life, reaching immortality and all kinds of stuff).
