Karia, a Minneapolis day care owner, was sentenced to 10 years of probation for trying to kill a toddler in her home by hanging him from a noose.

Natalia Karia, originally from Ukraine, was operating a child care center at her home. One day she had a major psychotic episode during which she had made a noose and hung an 18 month old boy who was one of the children in her care. Fortunately, the boy was rescued by a father who had stopped by to drop of his child at the facility; otherwise, the boy may have very realistically died.

Having been discovered, Karia panicked, tried to flee in her vehicle, got into an accident, fled the scene of the accident and struck three people in the process. Fortunately, all three of her victims in that episode survived - as did the boy she had attempted to hang. Best I can tell, none of her victims suffered long lasting injuries - though the threat to all of them was, naturally, quite substantial.

So now Karia has pled guilty to attempted murder and third-degree assault and a plethora of other charges related to the accident. And she has been sentenced to 10 years of probation but no prison time - and hence will be free to go and rejoin the society having only served several months in jail in pre-trial detention.

Her primary defense is abuse she had allegedly suffered at the hands of her husband, both in Ukraine and in the US. While if that is true she deserves sympathy on account of abuse she has suffered the wisdom of this sentence is questionable at best. Another question worth asking is, would a male defendant receive the same measure of judicial leniency under identical circumstances? The answer to this seems to be an almost definitive "no".

And if that is the case, what kind of justice is this, really?

WOW! OMG this is sick! And all she gets is 10 years probation!? Had she been any color but white they would of given her 20 years! It is like that drunk teen in Texas who killed 4 people drunk driving and only got 10 years probation. They called it "affluenza." BULLSHIT! Only in America will they normalize such sick behavior from people. And then people wonder why I'm such a nihilistic misanthropist SMH.

I am not sure this is a class or racial privilege at work - I suspect, more likely than not this is female privilege. As it was in the case of Loretta Bobbit.

Though, I must say, attempted murder of a toddler is a lot worse than attempted murder of an adult man.

is it a woman who is ready to kill her child, such mothers should be put in prison

It wasn't her child, it was a child in her care. Not that that should make a difference as far as judicial system is concerned.

And yes, I fully agree with you - attempted murder is a serious matter, one should serve prison time for that.
