How Long Should Your Social Media Posts Be?

Getting The Balance Right!

Firstly let me point out that I am discussing the length of posts to networks such as Facebook or Linkedin, NOT articles or blogs (which should be ideally of a word count of 350+ and include one photo within.) So back on the subject of how long your social media posts should be to engage your fans on your Facebook, and as you can see from the heading of this article the clue is in getting the balance right.

With all social media networks, it is all about engaging your fans and followers. But you should avoid writing lengthily posts on a daily basis, keep your posts short to a couple of lines most of the time where possible, unless of course you are creating a post to invoke discussion or the launch of a new product or promotion.

Writing Ad Copy


If you are wanting to get your point across, usually a couple of lines will suffice, however it does no harm in writing a couple of paragraphs if you are explaining something and want peoples reactions from it. When writing ADS as well try and structure them so you get most of the information across in the first three or four lines. (Last thing you want is for the call to action to disappear and be replaced with a 'continue reading...' button.
I find that good Ad copy is usually structured as follows, Headline - What you are selling. Explanation - About what you are selling, maybe a couple of lines explaining the offer, service or promotion. Call to Action A line encouraging people to click through, such as 'Buy Today', Get Yours Now!', 'Take advantage of our limited offer and buy today!' etc and then finally Link - The url to your offer, or this could even be a link to your Facebook Messenger for enquiries.

Further Posting Tips.


Also a tip when posting about news or links to your site, don't just post the headline and the link, throw a little teaser or hook in-between to 'encourage' the fan to click your link. It is all about getting that curiosity factor!

Of course, those one-liners are still useful, and asking very short and thought-provoking questions can create engagement and discussion, such as 'What are your thoughts on xxxxxx?' and of course inspirational quotes. I do however recommend where possible to use photos and infograms and avoid text only posts, it is a known and proven fact that a picture really does paint a thousand words on social media and they also, on a general scale of things, get a much higher engagement than text only.
