Will Bayern's New Manager Succeed Or Fail?
Bayern Munich has appointed Eintracht Frankfurt's manager Niko Kovac, who will succeed Jupp Heynckes as their manager at the end of the season. The 72-year-old is now in his fourth spell and Bayern and will return to retirement after this season is over.
Niko Kovac will have big boots to fill if Jupp Heynckes wins the treble yet again. The former Croatia captain and manager Kovac played for Bayern as a defensive midfielder from 2001 to 2003. He has signed a three-year contract and will take up his new role on the 1st of July.
Many managers from Mauricio Pochettino to Thomas Tuchel have been linked to the Bayern job, but Kovac was chosen instead. How will he do next season? Let's take a look.
Analysis
Despite not being a big name manager and having to succeed managers such as Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Jupp Heynckes, Kovac is not without experience. Kovac spent much of career playing in Germany for Hertha Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as spending two years at Bayern.
As a manager, he managed to take Croatia to the World Cup and transformed Eintracht Frankfurt from relegation battlers into top-four contenders in a mere two years. The only weakness would be a lack of Champions League experience. At Bayern, the Champions League has always been a goal every season, and thus he will have to learn the ropes fast. The dressing room will also be a significant indicator of success. Ancelotti proved himself not capable of handling the players' ego and was given the sack. Heynckes was an excellent man manager and managed to keep everyone happy; he will be a tough act to follow.
Despite a move away from the big-name bosses for Bayern. It is clear why he was the next best choice after Thomas Tuchel since the club hierarchy were adamant that they wanted a German-speaking head coach to replace Heynckes. Nagelsmann's age may have been a problem for the club's bosses as some players are older or younger than him.
Kovac definitely should be given a chance to prove himself as his pedigree coupled with the strong squad Bayern will see Bayern continue it's domination domestically. In Europe however, it remains to be seen if he is up to the task.
What do you think? Will he succeed or fail at Bayern?
