Smedley the Chummy: A 1930 Austin 7 Restoration #3

in #socalsteemit6 years ago

This is Smedley, and my dad, Eugene Calman.

Smedley is a 1930 Austin 7, acquired in Adelaide, South Australia in the mid 1990's, and shipped to San Diego California.

Passing of the Torch

If you read through above, you will find this is a build by my father and I, and with his death on June 2, 2018, it has fallen on me to finish the job in his honor.

My father Gene was nothing if not industrious and a life-long tinkerer. he was mostly meticulous in his work, and passed that on to me. the following images are the last I have of work done before his death, and  I have none of the assembly procedure done over the winter holidays, as I had a non working camera and not enough time during the process of assembly.

Below is the chassis, cleaned of rust and painted with automotive enamel.

The front suspension

Brakes

And the engine, ready for painting and fitting into the chassis, we did this before installing the body.

Here is the body tub, Most of the work has been done, with some shaving and filling of holes , plus new wood framing around the top to correct the lines, which were supposed to be curved, but were not. Dad fixed this by cutting slices 1 inch apart down the top of both sides of the aluminum tub, and then inserting specially cut curved frame pieces back in. The wood used was Vermont White Oak.

Dad is doing some thinking in the background. All shops need a good thinking chair near the work area so you can sit and visualize...

At this point, The body and fenders and hood and many other parts were sent out for painting, and when they returned, over the December  Holiday break, 2017, My dad, my brother Paul and I assembled the Chassis, engine, and tub, and attached the fenders, and put the engine peripherals back on. My brother then refitted a new side-draft Carbeurator replacing the damaged updraft carb the car came with, and built a new throttle linkage.

My father then started the wiring process, and I will leave that for update 4.

Thanks for coming along!

I'm sorry for your father, he looked very friendly. I like your work you are doing here, and I wish I could put a chair next to my project the way you are doing it! Keep on going!

Thanks, He was much better in his old age than when I was young. I am happy to say that we had a good relationship, and that he died doing what he loved, messing about in old cars.

Great work going on with the Austin mate. Thanks for the update.

Stick around, should have more images of the parts and the wiring process up in another day or so.

Will do mate :)
